Bad Ad Reporting Thread

I got this e-mail today in the Bulbanews editor account:

Hi,
You have a very nice site that my nine-year old son enjoys. However, whenever he searches a Pokemon name in your site, adult content ads show up in the advertisements.I just want to bring this to your attention so that you may be able to prevent children from seeing adult ads.
Thank you very much,
(name omitted)

Can we go back to the Google text ads?

That problem should have been fixed. (Admittedly, the email came before that.) Google text ads, unfortunately, do not generate enough revenue to be worthwhile.

all the 'pornish' ads should go in (forced) the HOS and other "trolled" posts.. just for the effect of course..

I've, personally, only seen the ads when I'm logged out but since I rarelt do log out, that means that I almost never see them. (I did log out to see them.. to see what ads / ad services that was being used)

I think these ads would also count as suggestive. I found them today, first two in Bulbanews, and last one in Bulbapedia. Also found Birhtday Surprise and another one like the last one as well today.

I saw the one with the bikini-clad woman with her foot up on the tv yesterday, too.

They shouldn't be there anymore.

Again, if you see something, please provide as much information as possible about it (screencap, link location, etc) so we can identify and remove the ad. Our current method of serving ads is a blacklist, not a whitelist--we don't let certain things through, we keep only a few things out. Which means that the company we use will serve stuff if we don't block it pretty specifically. And we don't want bad ads. But we can't discover them all on our own. So help us out and let us know what's wrong.

...

Not really. She's wearing reasonable underwear at least... and it's not particularly "suggestive" either, so it probably didn't get classified as such. Blocking this sort may be difficult... hmm.

The ad system is bad in general. It's like, all these erotic ads show up on this kid-friendly site, and the only way to get rid of them is to register, which requires an e-mail address, which many parents are not okay with giving out.

We find the ads are a better way to run the site than to keep asking for money directly from users, because the old system of ad support just couldn't pay our ever-increasing server costs.

Just to give people a little idea of the situation we're in.....Bulbagarden's server currently costs about $500 US a month. And that's only because we're getting a very hefty discount for various insert long story here reasons. Donations just can't cut it anymore.

Having said that, please do continue to report any inappropriate ads, so we can have our advertisers remove them from the rotation. People who don't have email addresses, and don't feel comfortable about giving out the family one, I strongly encourage to set up a "throwaway" gmail or hotmail or the like to register with.

I keep seeing an ad that gives me the creeps and makes my little sister laugh. (She dosn't get that stuff) It's for Evony (I think that's how you spell it) but I'm not sure how to get a picture of it up. Could someone please do that if they agree with me.

i get pop ups and stuff telling me i won stuff. geez, stupid Zango. like those ads with the spinning sand box that says "You are the 999999999th visitor, click to recieve our daily prize" or a pop up that says "Congrats, you won a free Nintendo Wii!" that one happens to TALK to you. i already HAVE a Wii, ya stupid pop up! >_< i even occasionally get ads to games like Pokemononline.com, which forced me to download Zango, ruining internet explorer. it's SO frustrating, i try to close down an ad, and it closes down all of my Internet Explorers almost all the time instead! there's a 10% chance it will successfuly close down the ad. i got bombarded with Mini ads when i got onto bulbapedia, and ANOTHER one appeared when i got on the forum. >_<

You should never get popup ads from us. And if you're logged in, you should never be seeing ads. If you're getting them on the forums while logged in, you've been hit with malware from somewhere, and they're simply triggering the adds when the malware notices you loading a page from a popular site. I suggest you download copies of things like Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy (both of which are free anti-malware programs) to clear your system.

They aren't from Bulbapedia. I'm serious.
Let me explain. I have Zango, and whenever i go to a new site, an ad just springs up out of the blue. It's really annoying. This is how i would react if the Zango man was real and i caught him walking around: :saiyan: Yes, i really do get that mad sometimes.
