Japanese games played on English consoles and vice-versa

I own the Japanese version and the English version to everything that's been released so far. However, I'm still a little weary playing the games on a system not programmed for that country.

If playable, the game will obviously be in its original language, but do some games not work on other systems?

Examples- Playing Japanese D+P on an English DS/lite, playing English Red on a Japanese GBC, etc.

To the best of my knowledge, all Nintendo handhelds are region free.

Handhelds, yes, consoles, no.

And Japanese DP won't work with English RSEFRLG to transfer Pokémon through Pal Park.
