Forum Help Profile Posts Vs Direct Message

So, this forum has two means of directly speaking to users: the profile post and the direct message. What's the culture here on when to use one over the other? Obviously, direct messages are made for secret sharing and (less fortunately) for staff warnings, but what else would be reason to send a direct message? Are there reasons to use a profile post aimed at a user aside from having it appear in the "New Profile Post" section?

I believe profile posts have a character limit, so if what you're looking to type out is very long then, DM's the way to go, but beyond that and whether you're comfortable with the particular information being public, it's down to personal preference.
