Yes, that's what I meant. I know she wasn't technically afraid in that episode, but it must be a fear in the back of her mind or she wouldn't have brought it up.

She does actually stop cheating and take on just one persona during BF. Unfortunately, that comes to a rather sour ending in the last contest when Harley finally gives her an outlet to cheat :/ But the intention was there up till that point!!

I'll have to keep an eye out for that when I hit BF next month. I should be able to finish off AG by the time DP ends. (And holy crap I'll have finally seen every episode! O_O)

And I agree with what you said - they got some focus (in OS) but nothing actually changed. And hell, they didn't even get focus in AG. I'm really excited to see what will happen with Ayako in 3 weeks time. I hope it gives us some character developpment!!

That's what I thought was so interesting and why I wrote the post. As nice as all the hugs and random shippyness were, the characters themselves were very stagnant. I know Pokemon isn't known for character development, but now that we're finally getting some, it's amazing we haven't really had it before!

How well the movies follow along with the rest of the series kind of confuses me, I've heard mixed things about whether they're "canon" or not but apparently they've mentioned some in the show before...

All the movies are canon.

The thing is, it's not so much character developpment as a reaffirmation that they both really care for each other :/ I'm not sure if it's really CD as such.

I mean, I guess you could say that the distance that grew between them in AG was CD, but, like, negatively so After all, not all CD is good, right? But even if you count that, we certainly didn't get anywhere far, either forwards or backwards, in AG.

Yep! Once I really got into Pokemon I decided I wanted to watch the show in order. So back in 2007 (I guess its been that long? Maybe early 2008 at the latest) I started with episode one and have been working my way up. I'm at the Houen League right now, so I'm finally getting close! :-D

I don't hate AG as much as most people here, but it saddened me watching Kojiro and Musashi becoming more distant with each other. :-(

It was weird that there was no Hosos this gen. Dunno why. I bet a lot of people wanted to see how's Haruka and the rest (hoso about Harley would be uber-win! xD) doing in Jouto. And there would be always a chance that the Rocket could get another Hoso too... D: Darn.

Well, if the anime does get a reboot,

Wowz! I actually have no idea how many episodes I've watched [more dub than Japanese, especially if you count what I watched ten years ago] but maaannn I wish I had that kind of determination for anything XD Hopefully some day I'll have seen every episode [or at least every good episode, I'm pretty picky when it comes to TV shows haha].

I've always thought Musashi said that because she wanted Kojiro to have a happy life - She did think of Kojiro's feelings, but there was something she doesn't know about her friend: She means the heaven and earth to Kojiro, but how could she know it, especially since Kojiro can't admit it to himself either? Just notice the difference between Nyasu's and Musashi's goodbye in DP117 - he was totally crushed in a different way, but he hid his feelings by claiming something about being a team...

tl;dr - Musashi was egoistic, but not egoistic enough to think that Kojiro would want to spend the rest of his life with her.

I have this vision of the possible fan fic finale of the anime, but it's too long to explain... But it would follow the plot of DP117, except that Kojiro convinces Musashi to take him with her to the Contest journey... Or whatever she wants in the next gen.

I have to admit, that I have problems with interpretation of her words here, because it was kind of surprising. I thought like this at first too, but now it doesn't look so easy to me, since Holy Matrimony covered pretty much everything when it comes to Kojiro's stance towards money and we know that Musashi's aware of that.
Sure, she had a good intentions here. But it still doesn't explain why she thought that he would choose his luxurious life before Team Rocket now, when he chose staying in Team Rocket in Holy Matrimony. But like RG arleady said, AG caused a rift between them, so maybe she thought that they're not that close together as they were at that time and that would change his attitude or something? Well, we all know Kojiro's attitude towards Musashi's contests until DP117 after all... She had a right to think that he doesn't care about her anymore. Not like she was good to him (and his Pokemon) either of course, so it's pretty understandable that she would assume that he doesn't want to sacrifice himself for her.

Ok, now that I reconsidered it, you're right, that line wasn't that egotistic. And hey, I want to hear your speculations about finale too, please do share!

The following is what I thought would be small, but ended up being some huge super long post. >_< My writing class is getting me thinking too much...

So I've been thinking about character development, and I want to compare exactly how much each series has had. I'm ignoring Nyasu completely since this is a Rocketshipping thread and it just makes things easier.

Original series
We start off with two crooks that are out to steal rare and valuable Pokemon. We later learn in the shipwreck arc that they care for each other as more than just partners, and the bond continues to show even more in Guardie and Kojiro. Musashi learns that Kojiro would never leave her for money, but that changes a bit later... We continue on with fearhugs and stuff throughout OI and Jouto... but at the end of it all, nothing has really changed.

Advanced Generation
Musashi begins doing Contest, cause a rift between her and Kojiro. Musashi sucks at them, cheats, and even abuses Kojiro's Pokemon. Kojiro seems to be becoming more disinterested in her. Near the end of the series we learn that Kojiro doesn't want to marry Musashi, but Musashi doesn't feel the same way... she still cheats and sucks at Contests, so once again, nothing really changed since the beginning of the series. The break up for a bit, but that just reaffirms their bond more than actual character development. Again, nothing really changes due to that episode.

Diamond and Pearl
We pick up where we left off last time. Musashi decides to stick with one persona and doesn't cheat at first. When that doesn't work, she has Kojiro and Nyasu rig a Contest. However, they never do, but Musashi wins anyway! Kojiro theorizes it's because the pressure was off Musashi so she could relax and just be herself.

Eventually Musashi find out she won the Contest on her own. She gets kinda a big head about it and bombs the next two. I guess she gets it through her head that she should practice and just be herself again, (I wish Tomioka had been more clear on this) and she ends up winning her second ribbon!

Pausing Contests for a bit, we have yet another break up episodes. This one, however, is it a bit different. It impacts Kojiro in that he seems to think only the hope of success as a team is keeping them together. He becomes extremely pro Rocket-Dan and starts taking charge more often. We once again revisit Musashi's fear that Kojiro would leave her for money. It's unclear whether she finally understands that he never would.

Back to Contests. Due to the success of them (and possibly Kojiro being in her shoes, it's hard to say right now.) Kojiro becomes much more supportive and no longer has any problem with Musashi doing them or even using his Pokemon! He also seems to think she actually has realistic chances to win now. However, he becomes confused whenever she puts this above Rocket-Dan work. Which brings to where we are now. On the cusp of Musashi winning her fourth ribbon, and more than likely some more development thanks to Ayako.


So, did I leave anything out from the first two series? You guys are much more familiar with them, and I haven't seen most of BF yet so I don't know when Musashi stopped cheating or if anything was said about that.

Assuming I haven't forgotten about some huge chunk, it's interesting how, IMO, diamond and Pearl is really the first time they've had real character development over the course of a series. The original and AG seemed to just set up character traits at the beginning, but never really expanded upon them. Once Diamond and Pearl is over, I'd really like to go in-depth and compare just how much has changed. I think it'll be quite interesting when all is said and done.

I know that DP153 didn't bring us anything as she couldn't care less... But you know, it's kind of good, since we all know that she wanted to force Kojiro to marriage with Rumika in Holy Matrimony to get his inheritance. Of course, it would have been better if she interacted positively somehow, but I guess it's yet too early for that. To me, it looked like she just pretended to not care, because she probably just didn't know how to act to not get into awkward situation. It shows that even after DP117, it's really hard for them to be honest with each other (yeah, it takes a near-death situation for them to be honest). She cared deep inside though, since she agreed to impersonate Rumika (and we know how much she hates to be compared to her!) and was pretty much concerned to open that treasure chest (and she even thought of passwords for Kojiro - she actually thinks she can read his mind or what? xD). I don't know how much my way of thinking is good and how much DP153 is significant since it was Yonemura writing, but if we get another encounter with Rumika, I hope that Musashi will interact this time.... but it really depends on what happens in the next months and what character development we'll get.

Does movie 8 count as character development to you go guys? I know it was a spark in the middle of the misery of AG for the shippers... It does show that Kojiro cares for Musashi and doesn't care about dying after losing her... IDK, help me out here!

Hmm... to be honest, I'm not sure either. It indeed was a very important shipping scene, but it's hard to say if it was a character development. It was still AG, and we didn't get true character developments until mid DP really... Until then, every shipping scene was just pretty... random, just random. It might be character development comparing to Celebi movie, but for the whole rest... no, I just don't know, really O.O I have to think about it more.
