The salt in the wound would be Gou "capturing" and brainwashing Ho-oh with a single curve ball throw that's identified as "eXcELLeNt!", at this point I wouldn't put it past the writers to pull off something so underhanded.
and then comes the greatest pile of salt

Ash giving all his Pokemon and Pikachu to Gou at the end of the series as he rushes back home to lock himself in his room forever while Gou takes his position, thus becoming the new star of this new era

Out of all the pokemon that Ash owns, Mr. Mime (who is a family pokemon) had the highest chance of being the second member to battle.

And "Mr. Mime is Delia's so how can Ash send it out to battle when it isn't his" problem:

Dedenne was Clemont's pokemon and he allowed Bonnie to keep it and it listened to her. From what we see in the pokemon franchise, Pokemon don't necessarily have to be re-caught or have their ownership transferred in order to obey other family members. They just seem to listen if there is an agreement. In the games Faulkner says he uses his father's bird pokemon. In Pokemon Adventures, one of Gold's early team members was an Aipom which was a family pokemon.
Delia left Mr. Mime to take care of Ash so it would most certainly help Ash if he asked it to battle.

It'd be cool if Ash actually caught Mimey prior to the battle. That'd make it his first Psychic AND Fairy Pokemon.

Oh gosh this again. Why would he catch his mother's companion? She agreed to let Mr. Mime be Ash's caretaker but that doesn't mean that she's fully prepared to hand Mr. Mime over permanently...

Except for a teensy little detail that you seem to be forgetting: the fact the Clemont caught Dedenne for Bonnie. You see, Bonnie really wanted to have Dedenne as her Pokémon because it's cute. But, since she's not 10 years old, she can't technically own or even catch a Pokémon. As such, she asked her older brother to catch it for her and let her take care of it until she's old enough to own Pokémon, after which he'd probably give it to her, which he agreed to do. Dedenne is Clemont's Pokémon only by a technicality, but, practically, it is Bonnie's. Not the same as using your caretaker Pokémon (that doesn't even belong to you and whose trainer didn't give you permission to use it in battle (as far as we know; not that it would make matters that much better)).

In the games Faulkner says he uses his father's bird pokemon. In Pokemon Adventures, one of Gold's early team members was an Aipom which was a family pokemon.

And is there any reason to assume that these cases aren't the same as Marnie and her Morpeko, where the trainer receiving the Pokémon as a gif from people they're close to (such as family) and that, instead, they're actually using Pokémon that don't actually belong to them?

Delia left Mr. Mime to take care of Ash so it would most certainly help Ash if he asked it to battle.

Taking care of someone (as in looking after them, preparing food for them, washing their clothes, tidying up their room etc.) and being they're battle partner are two very different things and the later isn't implied by the former in any way, shape or form.

Mr. Mime isn't Delia's. We have never seen her 'officially' catching Mimey and we never saw his Pokeball either. Mr Mime is still a wild Pokemon and as such, up for capture. As such, Ash also doesn't need Delia's permission to use it in battle. Even if Ash officially catches Mr. Mime, this doesn't mean he cannot let it stay at home with Delia either to be her companion, since i doubt Ash catching it takes away from Mimeys bond he shares with Delia.

I don't think anyone's denying that Mr. Mime hasn't been caught by Delia, but I find that argument to be kinda irrelevant; the mime has been her personal servant for 20 years IRT and has the strongest bond with her not Ash, yet now people just want Ash to run in there between them and snatch Delia's only Pokemon pal... just because.

That's literally the argument that some people seem to be making since there's no justifiable reason why Ash must catch the mime. It being technically wild or not isn't the point since Ash isn't obliged to catch every wild Pokemon that he sees anyways - he's not Go.

And Misty never caught Togepi, and yet, nobody ever questioned it belonging to her.

Why do people have a problem with the son borrowing the family pokemon :/ I'm genuinely confused why so many people find the idea unacceptable. At the very least Ash could ask Delia for her permission and I don't think she'd say no.

I really don't care who owns Mimey, its has no reason to battle for Ash. Anyone can battle with anything as long as the Pokemon wants to listen, it really doesn't matter, the point is WHY make this ridiculous choice. Its like they are bending over backwards to not use old Pokemon at this point. And they absolutely knew that this "surprise" Pokemon would get old fans hyped. I think its funny that anyone thinks Mimey is a good nostalgia Pokemon, it had an extremely minor role, and very little to do with Ash. Its making me think about Tracey, who was from roughly the same era, had more use as a background character, and was more relevant than Mimey was, but still can't get a cameo, but Mimey is now a big part of this series just so they can make extremely annoying jokes and piss off old fans. And as far as nostalgia, Mimey doesn't even act like it used to act, so its not nostalgia, its just there to make mime jokes, which it never did before (and aren't funny). I just can't imagine they are so dense that they didn't think hinting at Ash using a reserve, any of which mean a mountain more to old fans than the sparsely seen Mimey, and then pulling this garbage wasn't going to make people really angry. This series honestly feels like it just exists for trolling. (Don't @ me about target audience, they could easily make a series that is just as enjoyable to kids without going so out of their way to piss off old fans, and then it would be more popular all around).

The point of people’s complaints isn’t on whether a Pokémon that doesn’t belong to someone will listen to them, it’s the fact that the writers basically baited the audience with the prospect that Ash would be using another Pokémon which pointed towards either Ash caught something or was going to be using one of his reserves only to be thrown the ultimate anticlimax that it was neither and instead was the Mr. Mime that belongs to his mother for no apparent reason. This neither serves as a fan service or builds character in a way that makes this episode anything more than yet another throwaway. The fact that Ash is using Mimey is something different but not in a good way and feels more like a joke than anything else.

Exactly.

Delia won't need Mimey anytime soon so why not making it part of Ash's team for this series?

[...]either Ash caught something[...]

He might catch Mimey before the tournament. It's be much better than random capture with zero backstory.

I'm also of the opinion that if Mr. Mime is going to be tied to Ash in this series, then he might as well use it (which is what Ash really cares about - the Kasuragis handled the household without Mr. Mime). I just think that it shouldn't have been treated as a secret.

To be fair, the writers might have had no idea how the episode would be promoted.

This is distinctly possible. I feel the marketing for this new series has been very awkward.

Just to put all my cards on the table, I don't mind the idea of Mimey being used by Ash as long as there's a good explanation, but I have trouble thinking of a good enough reason to use Mimey when Ash was many of his own Pokémon at Oak's lab. Yes, Mimey has a type advantage over Hariyama but so would the regional birds, and they have way more combat experience.
So far Ash directionless in this series so I'm hoping we get something in 9.
I do want to be fair after what happened with SuMo, though. It's still really, really early. Most past series' hadn't even reached a Gym by this episode.
I definitely don't think the new series had made a great first impression though.

I think that Mimey will suddenly get a desire to battle (hence the yoga, or maybe it's the other way around) and Ash will agree to take him to Hoenn. It isn't far-fetched that it's tired of following Delia's orders. It would be amusing if Ash kept this change a secret from her and it ended up backfiring.

Ash using Mr. Mime is so stupid that words can't even begin to properly describe it!

I quit, once this stops being the "Go show" and start actually letting Ash make some damn progress(And the TRio show up again too), I'll watch. For the first time ever, I'm stopping watching the anime. It's not fun anymore.
Go sucks and they completely changed Mimey! -_-
