Preview JN042: Sword & Shield I - Slumbering Forest

I only think that, cause the background looks familiar when we see Cinderace in the preview, but I know that's not much to go off.

I think that area looked more jungle and vine-like than the Slumbering Wield, which is more forest-like. The area that Cinderace was in was completely covered in thick vines. I don’t know where that would be, but I don’t think it’s Slumbering Wield. It could be Glimwood Tangle, but then again, that looks too bright to be there.

I’m guessing it’ll be an episode coming after the DD arc.

Wow, this looks great. Kind of bummed we got such little build up with Rose and Oleana, though. We barely even saw them before this episode, so I don't love that all that got skipped over.

Riolu and Raboot are definitely evolving this arc, but I highly doubt it will be in this episode. I'd be legitimately shocked if they did it this early, especially since this episode seems pretty action packed already. I'm calling it now: they're going to evolve at the exact same time, probably battling Eternatus, and it's going to be a fine line between insanely cool or super cringey.

Again the scans mislead us. I thought that Go with bond with Zacian and Ash with Zamazenta but in the preview it looks like is the other way around.
Tbh I always expected Ash to bond with Zacian and Goh with Zamazenta because the wolves respective combat styles match Ash and Goh's goals: it only makes sense for the kid with the goal to become the best battler to bond with the more offensively-oriented wolf while the one more focused on capture and research gets the defensively-oriented one.

I think I'll go by the facts we have with respect to the scene and setting.

- Ash and Goh get split up in the Slumbering Weald.
- Ash is lost in a light blue mist with a turquoise hue, Goh is lost in a dark blue mist with a purplish hue.
- Zacian emerges in the former mist, Zamazenta in the latter.
- Hence, Ash meets Zacian and Goh meets Zamazenta.

I wouldn't put much stock into the placement and cropping/pasting of the scenes, since this magazine makes it seem like it'll be the other way around (the placement in magazines have been all over the place lately and very misleading too), and today's preview implies that only Goh will meet both wolves.
I hope that Goh being the one to bond with both wolves isn't the case, though, because the entire point of the Galar Legend was that there were two heroes instead of one. One hero per wolf. Not only would Goh being the one who gets to bond with both wolves go completely against that plot thread, but it would only further validate accusations of him being a "Writer's Pet" and a "Gary Stu" and it's already tiring enough to deal with those arguments as it is. And it doesn't help that Goh is getting a lot of hate in some circles for effectively replacing Hop as the second hero of the Darkest Day plot, and I can assure you that the hate would only be multiplied tenfold if he ended up overshadowing even Ash.

Bruh you even lookin at the preview? Ash encounters Zacian and Goh encounters zamazenta. Also I think Riolu and raboot will evolve before the third episode of the arc because it’s shown in the opening that they are evolved fighting eternus. And episode 44 is called eternus

Actually, there is one way Gou could get both wolves and it wouldn't increase the backlash.
Under his control they both get KO'd by Eternatus then Ash arrives and wins. :p

Of course according to my divinations, in the 1,670,342 alternate universes where this Pokémon season exists, this event occurs in only 123 of them, and in roughly half of those Ash is a cyborg with a Pokéball launcher arm.
(You don't want to know what happens in universe 764,850 btw).

Edit:
You know the one funny thing?
After completing Sword I thought "well, hopefully the anime can do a better job with setting up Rose".
Instead he got one brief appearance before his villain arc.

Centiskorch there isn't trainer. Which Pokemon from trainer would attack the city? It's a wild Pokemon.

meh, to me it just feels like they are just cutting out the more personal part of this arc from the games and just saving the more "epic" parts of this arc. I don't think I have been this unenthusiastic about a Pokemon Anime Arc before this.
That’s because that’s pretty much exactly what they’re doing. Not only have they skipped the entire buildup given that they’ve barely covered Galar this resulting in a total lack of context but they’ve also lost out on how the overall plot had personal points for both Hop and Bede. You can’t just remove all of that an expect it to have the same impact especially since the repercussions also carried weight into the post-game story. This is a rush job pure and simple and it’s terrible that they chose to do it this early without letting the plot unfold first.

Oh please. Bede isn't even around for the game climax, and Hop's development has to do with the league (nothing all that special) more than helping out with Eternatus. So he hears about the non-existent legendary hero a few times throughout the story, while Go has only met Sonia once. What of it?

Bede is literally the one who, in his obsession with gathering more wishing star pieces for Chairman Rose, causes the mural to be destroyed and uncover the statues hidden behind it. That was a major plot point that tied into the Darkest Day plotline. On top of that, Bede was the catalyst for Hop’s character development which also was a major part of the climax of the story and post-game.

Which means he's not going to appear and Goh's probably going to be causing some good ol' monumental destruction because why use interesting characters when you can use bland OCs?

I think it's far more likely that they'll skip over the mural's destruction entirely and just make it so that Rose already collected all the Wishing Stars he needed for his plans. There's even a chance that the whole "there were two heroes instead of one" twist will already be common knowledge in the anime's version of the Galar legend.

That would be a huge disservice to the plot of the Darkest Day story especially considering the plot point of there having been a coverup with the legend having been both a major plot twist to the story and a major event that affected the story and post-game plot. Of course the anime doesn’t seem to be doing it much service anyway so I suppose pat for the course.

Okay, first of all, reminder that this arc is officially called the "Sword & Shield Chapter". Not the "Darkest Day Chapter". Not the "Galar Crisis Chapter". Not the "Eternatus Rising Chapter". The "Sword & Shield Chapter". And a fair amount of Sword and Shield's story is focused on Hop's development, from an easy-going boy with dreams of grandeur, to a disheartened trainer who keeps berating himself and believes that he's dragging those he loves down, to finally becoming a strong and confident hero who even earns the respect of a Legendary Pokémon. Hop's story, along with Bede's and Marnie's, and Sonia's journey are integral parts of the story that helped flesh out the world and build up towards the climax of the game. So all of them missing in a story arc that's supposed to encompass the entire story of Sword and Shield is a very valid criticism.

Second of all, no, Hop's story and development aren't tied to just the league. He, along with the PC, are the ones who help Sonia on her journey to study Dynamaxing and its origins and the ones who help her uncover the mysteries behind the Darkest Day. Hop snaps out of the depression he's in after losing to Bede (and the PC and Gordie/Melony) after Sonia compares him and the PC to the heroes form the Darkest Day, which motivates him to not give up and to keep on getting stronger. Hop is the one who helps the player find the Rusted Sword and Shield and helps them to reawaken Zacian and Zamazenta with them. And Hop plays a major part in the post-game, where he's the one partially responsible for the wolves being taken control of, where he's the one determined to save them due to feeling guilty and weak, where he's able to save one of the Legendary wolves and earn its respect (to the point of being considered worthy of catching it) and where he finds a new dream, thus concluding his character arc without involving the Galar League whatsoever.

You know, writing this, I've just come to realise that, despite me despising Hop for being the 4th major friendly rival in a row, his story is, surprisingly, one of the stronger parts of Sword and Shield. So for him to be cut out of this arc (and this series) and be replaced with [REDACTED], which leaves us just with the outstandingly stupid "1,000 years from now Galar run out of energy, so I'll start a cataclysmic event and awaken a literal monster that will cause endless destruction in order to save our region from a crisis (even though we have an entire millennium to find a better solution to the problem and prepare for it)" plot, really diminishes an already mediocre-to-bad story.
