Oki Draws Pictures

Blanc loves the Gen 5 subway twins, but most of all Emmet!
What is not to love about this cute frog? I'm not sure he is a Gen 5 subway twin, idk, maybe he is

"I really like the roughness! By the way, could you try to do Marley or Zisu sometime?" and "Would like to change my suggestion from Marley to Mai."

So, there you go.

Orchid your shading on this one REALLY popped off.. if you have the time at any point, I’m DESPERATE to know how you achieved the painterly highlights and shadows on Flareon’s neck fluff and tail. The fire is gorgeous too but MMMM THAT FUR SHADING… I’m dying for your secrets, the quality on this one is INSANE. Between that and the fire it’s just such a striking piece!!

It took me a while to reply to this because I took this all too seriously cx

In short: a lot of my process boils down to "doodle until I find something that looks nice". I usually don't go in with too much of a goal in mind, because the wonder of digital painting is that you get as many do-overs as you want! You can just use trial and error until you figure out what you want it to look like. (Obviously try to keep a light source in mind... but other than that, do whatever you feel like.)

But if you really wanna know the details, here's some behind the scenes from Oki's evil laboratory paint program of choice:
While it's not the only brush I ever use, the main one that I typically use for this type of thing is the default "Opaque watercolor" brush in CSP!
unknown.png

(seriously, like, SUPER default. I don't think I've ever touched the sliders other than brush size on here.)
It's important that I mention I don't just use this for painting, I actually use this for shading on lined pieces too. In those cases I use the "Dense watercolor" or a pen of some kind to block in the initial colors, then go over it with "Opaque watercolor" to shade it.

Despite the name it doesn't feel very... watercolory. It's more like an "oil paint" brush you'd find in another program (I know there are oil paint brushes in CSP but they don't feel the same to me). This one feels more versatile - as in, if you press down hard with your pen it'll put out an opaque blob of color, but if you use a super light touch, it'll instead pick up and pull other colors very nicely. It makes it really easy to both add in a new color and blend it, moreso than other brushes I've tried in the past.

For an authentically painty look though, it really helps to keep things simple, which is what I tried to do on that last piece. Less is more! Overworking it and blending it too much I find only leads to making it look odd and muddled. Limit yourself! Don't kill all your contrast! I usually try to leave some sharp edges and bits of solid color in there to avoid that (or I just screw with the values manually until I get them back. Seriously, use the tone curve tool, it's your friend). If I find it's getting messy, I try to stop myself there; maybe even wiping it clean and trying again. (don't be afraid to use strong, saturated hues, either!)

I'm not the most articulate person in the world, so if none of that makes any sense (or if you're simply more of a visual learner), I did prepare a kind of step-by-step "diagram" of my coloring/painting process. My descriptions are a bit vague, though hopefully you get the gist.

(it's small for a reason, click it or open it in a new tab to view it in full!)

...And if that didn't help either, I made some low-quality speedpaint gifs of said process! Specifically for things like this.

gif2.gif

(you can open these too!)
These were each about 6 minutes in length before I condensed them, so they were very quick scribbles. I probably could have taken the time to make them be better examples (the tail fluff one kind of embodies what I meant by overworking it), but I wasn't really thinking about it as I went along... so it's authentic that way I guess. :P

And one last thing of note: keep in mind all of these examples are on just one layer! When I'm doing something of a larger scale, I'll often use a ton of layers and other effects, especially if it's lined!!
For lighting, my favorite layer settings are Add (Glow), Multiply, and sometimes Pin Light if the situation calls for it. Overlay is also really awesome for certain things. The rest are almost too situational for me to say I use them often.
if I think of anything I've neglected to mention, I'll edit it in later...

And thank you!! I'm happy to hear you think so! It motivates me to keep doin' my best with these kinds of pieces. :enzap:

Sorry it took me a second to reply, I wanted to do so properly because you took such time and effort to do this for me!! Orchid genuinely thank you SO much!! This was super helpful!! I hope you don't mind if I incorporate any of this into my own art! T_T I also use a lot of add glow and multiply but I never considered pin light!! The way you shade hair and fur is gorgeous... If you have any free time in the future may I be so bold to ask for a tutorial on the fire as well? God, I'm genuinely so thankful for this. Our processes are similar but you use some avenues I didn't think about, like the opaque watercolor brush!

I can't thank you enough... it's wonderful! I'm in your debt a hundred times over LOL. Will come back to this for more reference!

Can you draw an Fight Picture between a Dragalge and a Liepard with two trainers in the Back ground. For the Trainers: With the Dragalge blonde hair, For the Liepard trainer Black Long hair? Two boys? When not its ok. I think come over it:enzap:

BTweenius: The with the Dragalge is me. You can watch my PROFILE PICTURE where you can find the basic's.

BT2: What about this picture?

How did I not see Kermit Emmet omg my day has been made
you are so very welcome I completely forgot I ever drew that
And also thank you Pip for indirectly reminding me with this notification that I need to post here again, I'm gonna do that pretty soon...

If you have any free time in the future may I be so bold to ask for a tutorial on the fire as well?
I am still getting around to this FYI. I do remember every now and then but have not actually sat down to do it at any point LOL. But rest assured it'll be here someday.

And as an aside, I'm very sorry to those of whom who have put in requests that I still have not honored. I've honestly been spending the past few months struggling with my art and have needed to focus on improving, so I haven't yet been able to find the time or energy to do so. I can't guarantee at this point that I will get them done, but I will hopefully try my best...

take some stuff:

I drew this for @Torchic W. Pip back in July, because I somehow through a stroke of fate stumbled upon their Art Fight profile. This is his fankid Sparrow! Go show Torchic some love okay they're super talented

uuuh here's Miku and the Ashy-boy.
I've recently been drawing together with fellow forum friend @Blanc, because it's fun and it... amazingly, actually motivates me to make some art! These are a few of the warm-up sketches I've done while drawing with her lately. Nothing fancy.

There's a version of this without the sepia-ish color burn filter, but I think I like it better this way.

I drew this in like 5 minutes because I got sick of what I was working on LOL.
