Ireland prime minister urges yes vote in gay marriage referendum | World news | The Guardian

So tomorrow (Friday 22nd May) Ireland is due to vote on whether or not to make equal marriage legal.
If passed it would make Catholic Ireland the first country in the world to pass equal marriage via a national popular vote rather than have it imposed by the courts or parliament.

Opinion polls though they have been wrong in the past, currently show about 70% in favour of passing marriage equality, which is such a sharp turn around when you consider that homosexuality was only legalised in Ireland in 1993, that's right 22 years ago you could be sent to jail for being gay, and now the predominantly Catholic country looks set to make equal marriage for all legal, via popular vote.

Don't think it'll pass by as much as the polls here seem to think. Will be closer to 60/40 in favour.

As long as it passes, I'm perfectly happy. While I think marriage in itself is a kinda bogus concept, I also think everyone should have that right. So gg no re, Ireland.

I'll probably keep a close eye on what happens here tomorrow and Saturday. Didn't register to vote in time for this unfortunately.

It better pass.

Marriage is supposed to unify two people who are in love and act as ceremony so they can declare that love and make vows to look after each other. Also makes legal bits easier like inheritance. Who cares if they're not opposite genders?

Heard that a lot of Irish people are flying back to Ireland to vote in it and apparently the vast majority of them are Yes voters.

Things are looking good.

Yeah Dublin Airport was full of people flying home yesterday morning for the vote

1 hour into counting and a Yes result is almost certainly gonna happen once the final result is confirmed later today.

We've not even had 1 official result yet and already it's certain to pass with a landslide.

And most importantly, Ireland is united, there was much talk that the Urban areas would approve and the rural ones would oppose.
But while its true the Urban areas are much further ahead in terms of lead on the issue, even in the most rural areas we are seeing Yes leads of about 52-55%.
Of the 43 constituencies, 42 are certain to be a YES, and 1 Roscommon, is currently 50/50 too close to call (No have a tiny lead)

Also just seen a beautiful moment on RTE news they were interviewing a lady just asking what it means for her as she campaigned for yes, and then she asked if she could ask a question, and she turned to the camera and asked her same sex partner watching at home to marry her!

Can't see Roscommon-South Leitrim returning a Yes vote. Shame too. At least my own constituency voted Yes.

That was lovely imo.

Yes, Roscommon voted No, but by the narrowest of margins 49% YES 51% No
And it now seems certain of the 43, we've had 42 say YES. So I think Ireland is definitely united.

EDIT: And it's in at 17:20 local time!!! Dublin North the 35th constituency to announce its vote (34th in favour) made it mathematically impossible for No to overtake Yes.

Congratulations Ireland! :D

Congratulations to Ireland! Hopefully this will send shock waves to the rest of Europe to do the same.

If the Supreme Court of the United States hands a decision that legalizes gay marriage nationwide, with the combined impact of Ireland, huge progress in terms of LGBT rights will become the normal across the globe.
