“Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat” and the Van Gogh Museum promotion as a whole became infamous for the overwhelming crowds at the museum and the scalping of the collaboration’s merchandise, especially the card. While the art exhibit and events at the museum originally ran from September 28th to January 7th, the museum had to stop offering the card, which was originally a freebie with the experience, in mid-October due to safety concerns. Now, more than four months after the original scalping issues began, resale prices for “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat” remain in the hundreds in USD. While there are no officially announced numbers, some estimates predict that thousands of cards will be available in this reprinting, which will likely drive down the second hand price.
Simon Benton, Vice President of TCG Sales at The Pokémon Company International, said:
"The cards were extremely popular, and we heard that fans were asking if they could be available again in the Netherlands. I'm very pleased that we were able to print a very large quantity of cards so that fans can get their hands on one."
More controversy for Pokémon x Van Gogh Museum came in December, when at least four museum employees were fired due to misconduct during the promo. Employees reportedly advised guests on when to buy tickets to the museum, and one stole an entire box of the notorious “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat.” With the museum promo ending in January and the Van Gogh merchandise long sold out on the Pokémon Center's website, there is no currently no official avenue for obtaining the card outside of the Netherlands.
