    SOLAR SYSTEM MAFIA

    solar_system-1454399122838.jpg

Hello all, and welcome to Solar System Mafia!

This game will have roles based on the celestial bodies in our Solar System. Prepare to take the game of mafia into outer space, and perhaps you'll learn some interesting facts along the way!

    1. Forum Rules and War Room Rules apply.
    2. Day phases will last 48 hours and Night phases will last 24 hours. Votes and actions will be locked as soon as the deadline for each phase passes. Votes/actions at :00 count, those at :01 don't. If the host(s) are sure that they won't be able to update, they may announce a time extension in the thread.
    3. Please be active. You may be subbed out at the host's discretion. If no sub is available to take your place, you may be modkilled.
    4. Name claiming is NOT allowed, but any other kind of claiming is allowed. No quoting or screenshots of any conversation with the host, unless your role PM lists exceptions. This includes exact wincon wording and posting fake data that supposedly comes from said sources.
    5. You can't target yourself.
    6. To vote, use the following format: "Vote: <Username>". To unvote, use "Unvote: <Username>".
    7. All lynches (including No Lynch) may be hammered by Hyper-Majority rules. This means that if, at any given time in a Day phase, at least 2/3 of the players alive are voting for the same person, the Day phase will end as soon as possible with that player lynched (or No Lynch). If the phase ends with the votes ties, a No Lynch will occur.
    8. MYLO and LYLO situations will be announced.
    9. This is a NOC (No Outside Communication) game. As such, any forms of communication outside the thread that is not provided by the host is prohibited.
    10. Rules are subject to change. The host(s) will make sure to mention you if that happens.
    11. No loophole abuse at all, please. You may ask the host if a specific action you are unsure over would be considered a loophole in private and they may let it slide. However, obvious loopholes that are clearly outside the nature of the game abused without informing me beforehand may be faced with a zero-tolerance policy.
    12. The most important rule. Have fun!

    1. Once you are dead, you get one "death post" that may not contain any game-related information. And don't like any posts once you are dead.
    2. If you need a sub, please ask for it. I will be more lenient if you give me fair warning that you will be away from the game. That being said, please don't sign up if you plan to be away for voluntary reasons.
    3. Don't post after Hyper-Majority Hammer or during a host-announced Phase Pause. If I'm not around to end phase, assume that phase still ends.
    4. Posting during Night-Phase is allowed.
    5. If you change your username mid-game, please state your old and new ones in-thread and mention the host(s).

DAY 1 - Everything Revolves Around the Sun
  • DAY 1 - Everything Revolves Around the Sun

"I see those dastardly dwarfs are up to no good again." the Sun sighed as he watched over his little pocket of the universe. "Hopefully there won't be too many casualties among the planets. Well, not that I would really notice."

It is now Day 1. The phase will end in 48 hours on Friday, December 9 at 11:00 PM PST (UTC-8), unless a HYPER-MAJORITY is reached. Consider this time the current nominal update time for each phase, unless otherwise stated. Make sure to convert time zones.

With 11 players alive, HYPER-MAJORITY will require 8 votes for a phase-ending hammer.

Good luck and have fun navigating the Solar System!

NIGHT 1 - A Reddish Light Fades Away
  • NIGHT 1 - A Reddish Light Fades Away

    RainbowSkittles - 1 (Ghostly)
Seth Rollins - 2 (Seraphy, Space)
Space - 1 (The Force of Nature)

As the Sun watched dispassionately, one of his planets somehow was wiped from existence. Interestingly, the other planets and celestial bodies didn't seem to be physically affected by this. But it's not like he's an expert in astronomical physics or anything.

Seth Rollins was lynched. He was:
    Seth Rollins, you are Mars.

    1024px-Mars_23_aug_2003_hubble_%28cropped%29.jpg

Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun, and its distinctive red color is caused by the high amount of iron oxide on its surface. It has been the focus of many exploration missions, and is the only planet that currently hosts functioning spacecraft on its surface, with 2.

You are the Planet Cop. Every night, you can PM the action: [Explore] Username, which will attempt to determine if the target is a planet or not.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

It is now Night 1. The phase will end in 24 hours on Sunday, December 11 at 12:00 PM PST (UTC-8).

    DAY 2 - A Natural Satellite Disappears
  • DAY 2 - A Natural Satellite Disappears

When the news of what had happened broke, the swarming mass of life on the Earth broke into a panic. What would the effect in the future be? How much would they suffer without the tides?

    Space was killed. She was:
    Space, you are the Moon.

    FullMoon2010_%28cropped%29-1.jpg

While not a planet, the Moon is one of the most important celestial bodies in the Solar System. The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, and is in synchronous rotation with the it - only showing one side. It has had a very prominent influence on numerous cultures since ancient times, such as our calenders and mythology. One of the most well known images is the "Man in the Moon", which is most easily viewed from the northern hemisphere of Earth. As far as its physical interaction with Earth, the gravity of the Moon is responsible for the ocean tides.

You are the Miller. You will come up as "not a planet" on any cop reports.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

It is now Day 2. To get back to the normal update time, the phase will end in about 57.5 hours on Tuesday, December 13 at 11:00 PM PST (UTC-8), unless a HYPER-MAJORITY is reached.

With 9 players alive, HYPER-MAJORITY will require 6 votes for a phase-ending hammer.

  • NIGHT 2 - Silence, Or A Big Ball of Icy Gas
The Force of Nature - 5 (Hellcrow, WolfOwl, Zexy, Ghostly)

The Sun barely paid attention as a cold planet remained mute under pressure, and eventually, it was eliminated. While its moons frantically searched for a new stabilizing presence to orbit, the other players in the cosmic game were glad to see it go away. Really, even its name just didn't match up. Everyone knows that Roman names are just better.

The Force of Nature was lynched. He was:
The Force of Nature, you are Uranus.

    Uranus2_%28cropped%29-1.jpg

Uranus, while definitely a planet, has some interesting characteristics that differ from the rest of the planets in the Solar System. Its axis of rotation is tilted sideways, and thus orbits the Sun on its side. It is also the coldest planet, with an observed upper atmosphere temperature of 49 Kelvin (-224 °C)!

Among the english speaking population, its name has unfortunately been the butt of many jokes.

You are the Godfather Monitor. You will come up as a planet on any cop reports. Also, each night, you may PM the action [Peek Into The Inbox Of] Username, which will attempt to read any feedback messages the target receives that night.

You are aligned with the Planet Pulverizers, and win when your team reaches vote parity with town, or nothing can stop this from happening, while at least one member is alive.

Your mafia chat can be accessed here: <snip>

It is now Night 2. The phase will end in 24 hours on Wednesday, December 14 at 11:00 PM PST (UTC-8).

    DAY 3 - Boredom
  • DAY 3 - Boredom

The Sun decided to take a nap out of boredom. A few light-hours later, he jerked awake. He took a brief cursory check on his system, but he didn't see any new changes in the number of his planets. "How unexciting." he muttered to himself.

It is now Day 3. The phase will end in 48 hours on Friday, December 16 at 11:00 PM PST (UTC-8), unless a HYPER-MAJORITY is reached.

With 8 players alive, HYPER-MAJORITY will require 6 votes for a phase-ending hammer.

  • NIGHT 3 - There's No Outrunning The Sun
Zexy - 4 (WolfOwl, Elementar, Ghostly, Pikochu)
    Ghostly - 1 (Zexy)

The Sun was slightly annoyed now. The most recent loss of one of his planets meant he would have to work a bit harder to see what was going on. "Oh well. Not like its much farther to the next one."

    Zexy was lynched. He was:
    Zexy, you are Mercury.

    Mercury_in_color_-_Prockter07-edit1.jpg

The closest planet to the Sun, Mercury has the quickest orbit, with an average year length of 88 Earth days, and travels at speed of almost 48 km/s. It also has the largest temperature differential in the Solar System, ranging from 100 Kelvin (-173 °C) at night to about 700 Kelvin (427 °C) during the day.

You are the 2x Commuter. Twice in the game, during the night phase, you may PM the action: [Put On My Shoes And Fly!], which will make you immune to any actions directed at you that night.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

It is now Night 3. The phase will end in about 23 hours and 15 minutes, on Saturday, December 17 at 11:00 PM PST (UTC-8).

    DAY 4 - A Massive Loss
  • DAY 4 - A Massive Loss

The Sun was starting to get more irritated now. His biggest planet had just been turned into nothingness, and the shape of his system was gong to change in unforeseen ways.

    Hellcrow was killed. He was:
    Hellcrow, you are Jupiter.

    Jupiter_and_its_shrunken_Great_Red_Spot_%28cropped%29.jpg

Jupiter is by far the most massive planet in the Solar System, with a mass that is 318 times more than Earth, and 2.5 times more than all the other planets in the Solar System combined. Despite being farther away than other planets, it is the third brightest object in the night sky.

You are the Double Voter. Your day vote will count as 2, and will be reflected as such in the Votals.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

It is now Day 4. The phase will end in about 48 hours on Tuesday, December 20 at 1:30 AM PST (UTC-8), unless a HYPER-MAJORITY is reached.

With 6 players alive, HYPER-MAJORITY will require 4 votes for a phase-ending hammer.

Seraphy has been burnt to a crisp by the Sun modkilled. They were:
    Seraphy, you are Earth.

    Africa_and_Europe_from_a_Million_Miles_Away_%28cropped%29.png

Earth is the only object in the universe known to harbor life. It is the densest planet in the Solar System and the only one that has a significant amount of water on its surface. Many ideal factors have been measured as to the reason the life is sustainable on Earth, and those conditions are not found anywhere else.

You are the Doctor. Each night, you may PM the action: [Bring Life To] Username, which will attempt to save the target from one killing action each night.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

Do not discuss modkills. Further explanation will be provided in the endgame.

The Hyper-Majority will remain at 4 votes for this phase.

    @Maniacal Engineer

The Sun watched yet another planet poofed into a cloud of vapor, and seemed to be resigned to seeing his system reduced to completely uninteresting scenery. "Well, I guess I'll have to be patient. Perhaps I'll be surprised," he said, although even he had to admit the remark was unconvincing.

    Ghostly was lynched. She was:
    Ghostly, you are Venus.

    Venus-real_color.jpg

Venus is the second planet from the Sun and the brightest one in the night sky. It has the densest atmosphere of all the terrestrial planets and the hottest planet in the Solar System, with a mean surface temperature of 735 Kelvin (462 °C)!

You are the Ascetic. You are immune to all non-lethal actions.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

It is now Night 4. The phase will end in about 24 hours, on Wednesday, December 21 at 11:00 PM PST (UTC-8). It may end sooner if all actions are submitted early.

ENDGAME - What Revolves Around the Sun Now?
  • ENDGAME - What Revolves Around the Sun Now?

Tears welling up in his eyes (only to be immediately vaporized), the Sun watched with sadness as his most beautiful planet was destroyed by an asteroid strike. Not even its numerous rings could protect it from being torn apart by gravitational forces after the core was destabilized by the merciless attack.

    WolfOwl was killed. She was:
    WolfOwl, you are Saturn.

    Saturn_during_Equinox.jpg

Saturn is by far the most visually unique planet in the Solar System, with its stunning array of rings. It is also the only planet that has an average density less than that of water.

You are the 1x Bulletproof. You can survive one killing action during the course of the game.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

Meanwhile, yet another asteroid, while not as potent, sent another planet spiralling out of its orbit. Even if it ever stabilized, it would take millions of years to regain the status it once had.

Hellcrow has lost in the endgame. He was:
    RainbowSkittles Hellcrow, you are Neptune.

    Neptune_Full_%28cropped%29.jpg

Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun. It is the only planet that is not visible from Earth without the aid of a telescope, and was actually found by mathematical prediction rather than by observation.

You are the 2x Watcher. Twice in the game, during the night phase, you may PM the action [Focus My Telescope On] Username, which will attempt to determine who visited the target.

You are aligned with the Planets, and win when all forces opposing it are dead, while at least one member is alive.

As the deep blue planet was knocked off course, another celestial body dependent on its support went flailing out of control, while cursing its own bad luck.

Elementar has lost the game. He was:
    Elementar, you are Pluto.

    Nh-pluto-in-true-color_2x_JPEG-edit.jpg

Pluto used to be considered the ninth planet in the Solar System, but was recently reclassified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union, due to it not being the most gravitationally dominant body in its area.

Pluto and its nearest planet Neptune have a unique relationship. Pluto's orbit is constrained somewhat by Neptune's gravity, and because of the elliptical shape of Pluto's orbit, it sometimes is actually closer to the Sun than Neptune. Pluto also has a 2:3 mean orbital resonance with Neptune.

You are the Namecop Lyncher. Each night, you may PM the action [Measure Resonance With] Username, which will attempt to determine if the target is Neptune.

You have the win condition of lynching the planet Neptune. If you are killed before the lynch occurs, Neptune survives or you weren’t on the bandwagon when it occurred, you will lose.

You are aligned with yourself, and win when you have lynched Neptune.

Finally, the Sun turned its attention to its closest surviving celestial body. It was now the most massive entity in the area, and when the Sun squinted into the distance, it appeared to strut around the asteroid belt it used to call home. Now, it would call home "The Solar System"!

Pikochu has won in the endgame! He was:
    Pikochu, you are Ceres.

    Ceres_-_RC3_-_Haulani_Crater_%2822381131691%29_%28cropped%29.jpg

Ceres is the largest body inside the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and is classified as a dwarf planet. Due to its large size and mass compared to the other asteroids in its vicinity, it is able to capture them into temporary 1:1 orbital resonance, in which their respective orbits around the Sun are virtually the same.

You are the Roleblocker + 1x Strongman. Each night, you may PM the action [PHO] Username, which will attempt to roleblock the target. As an alternative action, once in the game, you may PM the action [Asteroid Strike] Username, which will take over your factional kill and make it unstoppable by any means.

You are aligned with the Planet Pulverizers, and win when your team reaches vote parity with town, or nothing can stop this from happening, while at least one member is alive.

Your mafia chat can be accessed here: <snip>

Congratulations to the Planet Pulverizers (Mafia) for winning the game!

Now for the explanation for the modkill on Seraphy.
During the final day, she name-claimed as the Earth in a now-deleted post, which unfortunately was seen by multiple people involved in the game. After much discussion with Maniacal Engineer, I reluctantly opted to modkill as it was the easiest way for me to negate the extra information that those players should not have had. Feel free to comment on this if you like, as I know it contributed to the game ending the way it did.

    Host Questions:
    Did you enjoy the game?
What did you think of the setup and mechanics? Was it balanced?
If you would like to change a single thing in this game, what would it be?

I will also publish the actions list in a separate post, as well as my take on how the game went.
