While taking a look at Japanese Crystal in a hex editor, something caught my eye in the place name data. At offset $92794, there's a location name that wasn't implemented in the final game: オバケやしき (obake yashiki), roughly meaning Haunted House. I haven't checked Japanese Gold or Silver, but the name may be in them, too.

Does anyone else know about this?

This is the first time I've heard of this. The only documented unused area names are as follows: Safari Zone, Pokémon Mansion, Cerulean Cave and Viridian Forest (I don't know why Lavender Radio Tower and Silph Co. are also listed, seeing as they are at least partially accessible). Granted, these are from the American version of Gold and Silver, so could you check the Japanese version? There is also a N/A listing, which might coincide with Haunted House in Japanese Crystal.

I just checked both Japanese Gold and Silver, and the name is there too, at offset $926EF in both. Also took a look at an English of Gold and the N/A is in the same place on the list as Haunted House is in the JP games (between Ice Path and Pallet Town).

We can only wonder what the Haunted House would have been like and why it was removed. The Johto games lacked a spooky place (even in Kanto).

It's likely that the inspiration was Himeji Castle, which is associated with ghost stories and located west of Kobe (which corresponds to Olivine City).

This is really interesting. It's a shame it was never put into the games, it would have fit right in in Johto.

Shame we may never know what it was supposed to be.

I'd really love for then to release a big concept art book like Hyrule Historia, that would be amazing.
