Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the second games of the 7th generation, announced at a Pokémon Direct on June 6th, 2017.

- June 6th: Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are officially announced via a Pokémon Direct.
- August 6th: Lycanroc Dusk Form is revealed on Pokenchi. A few days later it's revealed in CoroCoro and in an official trailer that it's event-exclusive.
- August 18th: A gameplay trailer for USUM is revealed, together with a new exclusive Z-Move for Kommo-o: Clangorous Soulblaze. Furthermore Game Informer released a video revealing a new gameplay feature, calld Alola Photo Club.
- September 12th: A CoroCoro leak reveals that the Pokémon on the cover of the games are two new forms of Necrozma it gains when taking over Solgaleo or Lunala.
- September 13th: Another CoroCoro leak reveals that Lycanroc gets an exclusive Z-Move that all forms of Lycanroc can use. A Nintendo Direct on the same day reveals the Z-Move is named Splintered Stormshards, and also reveals the English names of the new Necrozma forms: Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma. Furthermore, two new Ultra Beasts are revealed: UB Burst and UB Assembly.
- September 18th: A promotional poster is revealed, showing new characters in the shadows in the background. Also, Lillie is shown holding a Poké Ball.
- September 22nd: A new trailer shows some upgraded and new trials for the Island Challenge, reveals Mantine Surf as a way to travel between islands, and give more info about the Alola Photo Club.
- October 5th: A new trailer reveals a new Ultra Beast (UB Adhesive), Ultra Megalopolis, the Ultra Recon Squad, and that the player will be able to travel through Ultra Wormholes.
- October 11th: CoroCoro reveals a new move for Necrozma and two new Z-Moves for Solgaleo and Lunala, which can also be used by Necrozma's forms. Furthermore, it's revealed that Rotom Dex will have new features which you can unlock by befriending it, such as various Rotom Powers and the Z-Rotom Power. This is all also shown in a trailer revealed the next day.
- October 17th: An interview with Iawo and Ohmori in Famitsu Magazine confirms that these games are not a sequel to Sun and Moon. Furthermore it's revealed that there's an additional new episode after entering the hall of fame, and that you can find and catch Pokémon such as Mewtwo while traveling through Ultra Wormholes.
- November 2nd: A new trailer reveals Team Rainbow Rocket, The Battle Agency, and Totem Stickers. It's also explained that every Legendary from previous games can be found while traveling through the Ultra Wormholes.
- November 10th: A new trailer shows an unique Z-Move for Mimikyu.
