I've always wondered why Ho-oh was called Ho-oh, so I figured I might post it here. :-D

Its English name is simply another way of transcribing 鳳凰 Hōō, which is the Japanese word for phoenix, specifically the Chinese phoenix, or Fènghuáng.

The powers of Bulbapedia

I thought that looked like "hoo" until I saw that both were pronounced in their vowel forms. ^^;

Bulbapedia explains it all.
