Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

Hello. I'm sorry my little problem rather hijacked the thread over the past couple of days, but I'm hoping to get that all fully sorted out as soon as possible. So I've been thinking about this a fair bit and I'm really feeling quite a bit better about the whole thing - I mean, I still wish there hadn't been this little fiasco in the first place, but I think I'm getting out of it. In short, you guys' responses have really inspired me to get back on my feet and get going again. I really can't thank you all enough for that; I love you guys.

As for what I'm doing now, I've decided my best next move might be to send the chapter over to some volunteers (from the response so far, I'm guessing Pavell and Aether? - anyone else who wants can too). Their responses (which needn't hurry nor necessarily be too insightful or deep if you don't get time, I don't want to put pressure on anyone, and just being able to talk a bit about it would help) will hopefully then help me move on with the story. I have a fair idea of where it's going, but I still have lots of fine points to work out and I think some feedback would help immensely with this, and also actually making a decent piece of work at the end of the day. I don't plan to start uploading properly until it's finished and smoothed up a bit - it's a fairly small story though so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

So anyway, that's me. Hopefully this is the right thing to do - we'll see.

Nominations are open - make sure to cast your votes!

Is anyone doing the Scavenger Hunt this year? I'm completely stuck on the anagram! XD

I just finished writing an entirely new scene for Chapter Four of Eight Easy Steps. It's the scene that finally got me to go back and edit those first chapters, and I couldn't be happier to finally have it typed out.

I'll give it a look over. Can't promise just when I'll be able to get it back to you, but I will

Nice job, Jimmy. You could've put your one-shots up for nomination and actually gotten people to read them. Instead you give too much of a shit about Tumblr roleplaying to even open the Bulbagarden tab. YOU'RE DOIN' GREAT, KID.

Thanks everyone, I'd like to clarify I'm not absolutely ready to send the chapter over for review yet. But anyway, thanks a ton, I'm working on it.

Congratulations, Ace! If I could ask, what university?

Sidenote: if I go back to writing one-shots, my first one is gonna be Wallace having writer's block. Because OBVIOUSLY.

Whats the thought on script fics around here?

I'm generally not a fan of them. I've seen altogether too many that were in script format essentially as an excuse not to write any real prose. That being said, I have read one that works, that would be Wind and Rain

Hello. So the other day, my brother sent me a short list of writing jokes. Probably most of you have seen most if not all of them before, but I'll put them up anyway and hopefully someone will find them amusing.

1. Avoid alliteration. Always.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. Avoid clichés like the plague. They’re old hat.
4. Comparisons are as bad as clichés.
5. Be more or less specific.
6. Writers should never generalise
Seven. Be consistent!
8. Don’t be redundant; don’t use more words than necessary; its highly superfluous.
9. Who needs rhetorical questions?
10. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

Also, belated contragulations to Ace for your graduation.

I think number seven's my favourite

Came across something that actually made me smile today, out Christmas shopping, which makes it twice as unusual. In the queue in front of me, a mother was rather archly telling her daughter that Father Christmas watches all the time, so be good. The child, who could not have been more than about six, immediately replied "Let's test it!"

Ah, the spirit of empirical enquiry

Thanks for the congrats, y'all.

Remember to vote in the Winter Awards! There are still some characters and stories that haven't moved on. Also we can always use more nominations for the three user-nom categories!

I just wanted to announce something momentous:
I finally got around to changing all of the
fragments in srbs (RIP old BMG) to proper linebreaks. Also, I finally fixed the fucking table of contents as well. All is right in the world.

In other news, new chapter tomorrow. Probably will start plowing through the review backlog as well.
some of its hearts what's that

Just in time for the awards I see ;)))))) I need to do all those things as well: review, update links, update story. I've at least edited Eight Easy Steps for the first time in five years, does that count?

Can we talk about how cringy it is to go back and look over the stuff we wrote five years ago? It was physically painful to me to read the original chapters of Unpredictable I've fixed, and I never look forward to reading the next. Especially when you think about the fact that some people have read the story recently. They read this stuff. And it factors into their opinion of you now. They had to consider this shit when reviewing. That's part of the reason I'm only five chapters in. My edits quickly became full rewrites.

Omg, yes. I read TPI a while ago after years, and ugh. Not good. There are so many stories on here today that totally blow it out of the water, which is a good thing :)
