S20 Opening - "Under the Alolan Sun"

Can we, like, not have an opening were the singers awkwardly shout "Pokémon!" at the end?
We did to some degree with the intro before this one (although it was still there, just not the final word like it usually is), but it ended up being imo, the worst dub opening ever.

They sure don't sound excited to be under the Alolan sun.

You know what would have been nice? An Alola-esque version of the Pokemon Johto opening. Something new, upbeat, refreshing and indicative of a new region full of new Pokemon, adventures and experiences.

I'd agree, but given TPCi's track record with OPs, they'd probably just mess that up.

I'm still kind of amazed at the negative reactions. It definitely isn't anything to write home about and it does have it's fair share of problems, but I can't really see how this could be one of the worst dub openings ever. Not when the first DP dub opening, all of the BW dub openings and Stand Tall exist. I can see at least a good chuck of where the criticisms are coming from and it still wouldn't rank it high among the dub openings, but I think it is generally. Plus, for a TPCI opening, even one that works slightly well or is just okay is great for them. That's how I felt with the Kalos Quest dub opening too.

If only FUNimation had gotten it instead then we'd have an amazing dub and we'd have dubbed versions of the Japanese songs.
A lot of my issues with the dub would be fixed if this happened, although we'd get another dub voice cast, but I'd still prefer that to what we have now and it'd be fine since we've had at least 3 different dub VA casts since TPCi took over in various media- I feel your pain and empathize with it more than you know: all I can say is, I don't have anything good to say about the dub at this stage. For me, it's been poorly done for longer than it was handled well by now.

Well, you know, that's your opinion- not all of us feel the same. I feel that I've never heard a more passionless singer from the dub in its whole run, the song is devoid of any energy or enthusiasm to me, the editing is extremely poorly done, and the overuse of "Yeah!" and rhymes in the lyrics do little to make me invested in it.

While I agree with you wholeheartedly the first DP dub OP & Stand Tall are certainly very poor themselves, I happen to think the first and last BW dub OP are better than this was.

It must be a taste thing, I actually kind of liked Stand Tall and the first BW opening was pretty nice (and the first DP opening is my guilty pleasure :p)

I think it might also be because there were quite a few amazing english dubs of the japanese opening which, while I don't think anyone expected TPCi to actually dub it, got a lot of us expecting a different type of song.

I can't believe I've changed my mind about the opening. Its got this nice beach vibe and for some reason I keep repeating the "under the alolan sun" part and like I just enjoy it now

Footage:8/10
Rhythm:7/10
Singing:3/10
Lyrics:6/10

It was better than what I expected, it's not TPCi's best but is a welcome change after the dissaster that was Stand Tall. And it gets extra points for being similar in tune to both Alola! and Pose.

I don't think anyone expected them to change their ending policies after 11 years, I have to say I like it. Time will tell if they'll change it once per season or once per series, knowing TPCi I'm expecting the latter...

While that would have been neat, I don't think that there was ever a chance for Funimation to get Pokemon. They don't have much experience with toyetic series and more importantly, I'm pretty sure that the Japanese companies involved with the show didn't want to deal with another third party company after 4Kids couldn't keep the license.

Oh, I understand that and I'm not trying to belittle anyone who doesn't like it. I'm just really surprised at the immense negative backlash for it. It's been awhile since I've seen a dub opening so poorly received here, so it just caught me by surprise. While I don't think that the singer sounded passionless, I do think that it could have benefited from getting a different singer, especially when they've relied on the same people to sing the openings for ages too. I agree that the editing is pretty poorly done too.

I forgot about what the first BW dub opening was. I think I just put all of them under the generic friendship and together blandness group due to how they really started to go all out on those vague kind of lyrics during that series. But the first BW opening was at least okay and it actually used the terms black and white without randomly forcing it into the song, so that was neat.

While I actually remembered that I like the first BW opening, I think my problem with Stand Tall was how they revealed most of it during a promo trailer for the season. Even the movie version of the opening didn't really take advantage of the extra time, which in retrospect should have been more of a tip off for how this opening would go time wise. Singer sounded pretty bad to me in that song and they were trying way too hard to come off as tough. There are plenty of dub openings talking about how they'll keep winning, but there was much less passion in Stand Tall by comparison. The instrumental version is better, but I think it was also overused. They kept putting it in place of the Japanese openings and that sometimes worked, but sometimes it didn't and it did get pretty old after awhile too. Even hearing the instrumental versions of all of the dub openings in the XY finale reminded me how much better the first two openings were by comparison, even though one being a remix of the original theme would give it an edge too.

I have heard a couple of English covers of the Japanese openings and they are definitely way better than this song was, so I can understand that being a factor for the disappointment. I still wish that they did have at least something closer to a minute. That might not have necessarily improved the whole thing, but they'd have more time work with in order to come up with better lyrics and less sloppy editing.

I liked the font they used in the opening, and although the song was bad, the name is quite nice.

It's a nice change from the slower driving rock beats that characterized "Be a Hero" and "Stand Tall". It's different, almost whimsical, and I think that's appropriate for Sun & Moon. The song did feel rushed, but the footage they used was good, so points for that.

It does sound quite unique compared to its fellow opening themes, and that's definitely what I like most about it.

I'd still end up putting it on the bottom half of my list of themes though, right between "Rival Destinies" and "This Dream". Though perhaps someday I'll look back on it with nostalgia and award it a higher place. Only time will tell.

Well the music is okay.

Maybe they should have just skipped the singing part this time. But on a bright note, its certainly better than the last two.

That's fine, sorry if I came off as condescending in any way as well: I just don't care for this opening, but I respect anyone who likes it to any degree (like you).

I appreciate the apology, but I didn't think that you came off as condescending. I was just worried if I sounded like I was belittling people for disliking the opening or anything like that. I appreciate the respectfulness as well.
