Artistic retro styles are nice, but they’re not enough to get me and a large portion of the consumer base to shell out money just to go back and play an outdated game. The main draws of going back are the gameplay elements that you can’t experience in the most recent entries of the series.I somewhat disagree with this. The charm of older or retro games is the stylistic presence they offer as a period piece. People go back and play them because they are still fun to play even with less to offer. I don't think everything on that list of features is necessary, but there is no sense in removing features that benefit the overall quality of the series.
This is why they fixed Hoenn not having day/night cycles in the remakes. That feature was not "exclusive" to Johto... what, are they the only ones who can experience a standard 24hr day? By the same, seasons should not be exclusive to Unova. Nor walking Pokemon exclusive to HGSS/Let's Go, and riding Pokemon in the ladder. Anything that makes logical sense to keep and enhances the game-play experience should be kept.
A VS Seeker/Poke Nav to help trainers grind, or give interesting info on battling trainers would alleviate the fixation to make the games easier with little challenge. Now, to revisit a prior point, some things that don't need to be carried over that gives charm to past entries:
Poke'athlon - Pokemon Contest/Poffin Making - Pokemon Musicals - Poke Star Studios (I do miss this one) - Pokemon Amie (debatable) I think better Pokemon interaction betters the series, but not making battles even easier than they already are.
Gimmicky things such as these I completely understand, and in the case of features like rotation and triple battles... Game Freak hardly used them in the Gen they were introduced in. Perhaps they could have benefited from a Colosseum style rpg to better advertise the feature like Gen 3 did w/doubles. Point is, there are things that are gimmicks, and others that should rather be seen as foundations that help the next game entry to build off of.
There will always be monetary potential in older entries of Pokémon and GF knows this, but there has to be some incentive for the consumer to pay money for a game that isn’t the newest. Not that I like it, that’s just one reason why you don’t see all of these mechanics making a return.
