Review JN140: Tunbear's Sigh!

Ehhhhhhhhh, this was a bit mediocre.

Not as bad as I was expecting but easily the weakest of these 11 episodes so far.

Good points are Ash once again showing off his skills at helping other Pokémon out and both Oshawott (especially Oshawott) and Incineroar getting to make the most of their screentime.

It’s clear what they’re doing now, they are honing in on the Ash that will do anything for anybody or any Pokemon, those that he barely knows he’ll help often with reckless abandon for his own life. It’s no coincidence that there has been a Pokémon it seemed like Ash could have caught each episode; Latias, Clauncher, Hatenna and Beartic.

Ash understands Pokémon and can, and will work with any Pokémon.

This episode showed this so well, and I loved it.
This episode is okay. Ash reunite with his OG friends going alongside and try to help Tunbear to master it crafting the Ice and never given up. Till it heard it outcry and fall inside the icy pond. Before it finally mastered it move set and give everybody else it crafty piece all thanks to Oshawott motivation.

Overall rating: B-
It was cute. Misty and Brock were pretty useless in this episode

I feel the show is aiming towards "Pokemon master is someone who helps those in need /understand Pokemon" something like that
It is intention as Misty and Brock believe Ash can get out of any difficult situation.
The fact we've only seen Ash use five episode in every episode means there has been a sixth slot in his team so it is disappointing that Ash never used a sixth Pokemon or caught a new one
The more team members Ash has on him at any given time, the harder it'd be to give each team member quality screentime. Even with only 5 team members per episode, some of them aren't doing much in the episode that they appear in, so I really don't think Ash needs to bring a full team of six in these episodes. A team of 5 feels perfect, since it's sufficiently large without being too crowded.

Also, I don't think having a free sixth slot means Ash is obligated to catch something new. The past few episodes has placed an emphasis on how Ash can befriend new Pokemon without having to catch them, with this episode doing a particularly good job of showing Ash helping a Pokemon so that it can fit into its local community. Plus, any late captures at this point aren't gonna be doing anything past their episode (see: Clauncher), so I don't think it matters whether Ash catches his new friends or not.
No Team Rocket. Not even in the final episodes can they show respect to 25 year old characters. I´m done with this garbage. I´m sorry to everyone who wasted time reading my essays in the last few weeks, but I won´t waste people´s time anymore. Thank you for the past weeks. It was fun. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series and the new series to come. Unfortunetely I won´t. Goodbye everyone.
I think they could have used the OG companions better. Since this is an episode focused on a snowy setting, why not reference an old classic episode like Snow way out? Maybe this time Misty and Brock could have played an active role in rescuing Ash instead of just leaving him to freeze to death. I always thought that it was cold (no pun intended lol) of them to just make light out of the situation afterwards.

Perhaps Brock could have used his doctor skills more. They tried to include him at the end of the episode when he looks at Ash's injured foot but wouldn't it be more emotional if it was a similar situation to Snow way out? This would really have been like a final test for Brock as a doctor which could have given the episode (and the anime as a whole) a sense of finality.

We could even show Brock doubting himself and maybe even a call-back to his sad backstory when he had to take too much responsibility at home. I always interpreted the way he acted like a guardian in the OS episode when Charmander almost died, as him having been through something similar (perhaps one of his siblings got sick?). The scene when he just stays up all night refusing to even move (like a rock lol) while staring at Charmander's hospital room always gets me. I like to think this might have been the moment his doctor dream was born even though he tried being a breeder at first.

This would also have been the perfect opportunity to show off Misty's emotional and caring side. Imagine a similar reaction to Ash's "death" in the Lavender tower episode. I think this would show the younger audience what kind of relationship Misty has with Ash, it's not just arguing and tsundere nonsense but genuinely sweet moments as well. Could have been a good Pokeshipping hint if that is the end game they are going for (although it doesn't even need to be romantic).
This was a cute episode. I’m a sucker for training montages and it feels good to see Ash acting as the authority on a subject, so those parts appealed to me. The pokemon selection was nice, even if Snorlax was there for a minute, and for the little it did it’s dope to know Incineroar learned a new move.

But goddamn, did they give an explanation for why this Beartic was so freakishly powerful? This thing would stomp champions if an ice specialist got their hands on it.
