Word of the Week
desert (n.): that which is deserved or merited; a just punishment or reward. [Wiktionary]
After obsessing over words, she ultimately got her just deserts.
To receive one’s ‘just deserts’ is a typically misspelled idiom; like many such idioms, partly because the reason why it exists is not well known. This sense of desert comes from Middle English via the French deservir (‘To deserve’). Outside the idiom, this sense is no longer commonly used. So while your just deserts may well be dessert – and I hope they will be – they are not quite the same word.
