Writers' Workshop General Chat Thread

We try not to censor anything here, and it does give all of the proper warnings. Maybe all of our stories would have 150,000 views if we gave similar warnings.

"THIS STORY MAY DEGENERATE INTO MEANINGLESS AND GRAPHIC SEX. PROBABLY NOT, BUT WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN? CERTAINLY NOT ME. BETTER READ TO FIND OUT."

@Beth Pavell; Please put this in TLW

But what if a kid clicks a link that leads to one of the story's chapters, specifically ones not in the first post? Such links could show up in the awards or the quiz game or the Review game.

You might say that it's something of an inconsistency in that you wouldn't be able to post porn in the Art Gallery. I think Turning Over A New Leaf represents the extreme side of this, though. I can't remember ever seeing another similar fic

@AetherX: What, graphic sex or the warning?

This post is probably the best thing I've seen since joining bulbagarden. Just saying.

@Kelleo; Were Turning Over a New Leaf ever actually submitted to the Quiz or Review Game or any of those (God forbid), the links would also require a warning. There has been discussion among the staff in the past about what we will and will not allow as far as sex goes, and it's generally agreed upon that we will allow almost anything as long as it is appropriately marked.

Oh, alright. That's fair enough then. I would heavily enforce such rules though, to be on the safe side.

Of course. I just never knew that explicit stuff was allowed... I'm used to such stuff not being allowed, and I don't want write it anyway. I prefer to leave sex heavily implied and that's that. I did so in Happy Together (story 2 in my FE: Awakening series), so yeah. Heck, the first scene is lighter than the second and the second isn't heavier by a lot.

I write romance fairly often, so when I write sex, I write it this way so my readers don't think I'm some sex-obsessed perv when in reality, I don't even want it. I don't want to give people the wrong idea.

Sex scenes are one thing...but that story is more or less bestiality, and besides the "THE CHARACTERS ARE 18+ LEGAL", it's hard to not see the writer and the audience seeing the normal Leaf in their mind when they read that. It's pretty creepy. I made it about three minutes before I finished...uh, reading it that is. It looks like the author is a decent writer mechanically though, and not just some horny kid.

I'm guessing the writer is popular on other sites for that kind of stuff, and that story was a Bulbagarden exclusive.

On a less lewd subject, the conversation in the Cliche thread about legendary mons brought something to mind.

I actually have a kernel of an idea that uses a legendary, but not as a starter: Xerneas.

Being a legendary mon that has control of life and rebirth, it naturally occurred to me to make Xerneas a prominent figure in a kind of Orphean resurrection story, inspired in no small part by the premise of the game Shadow of the Colossus.

It's a relatively straightforward base idea: a determined protagonist is desperate for a way to bring a recently deceased loved one back from the dead. The pursuit of this goal brings them to Xerneas, who in turn has a dangerous, dubiously motivated task for the protagonist.

Part of the inspiration came from wanting a way to show how Fairy types may not be universally "good"; a kind of complimentary inverse to how the Pokemon series shows that Dark types aren't universally "evil". An Orphean resurrection plot seemed to fit in nicely, and could possibly be told in the manner of a fable, set sometime long in the past.

Well, that was interesting. I return after not very long, and look what's happened! Now I'm kind of glad I never disclose much information about my story...

Hmm, might just be me, but I never really portrayed fairies particularly positively. There's quite a nasty sylveon in my story who... no, that's a spoiler, but the point is I tend to depict the stereotypical fairy as being sort of like an overly-mischievous child - most of what they do is simply for selfish enjoyment, and they have little understanding of the consequences of their actions. Of course, that's just a stereotype and is not by any means universal, but such traits remain present in many fairies, to varying extents.

With regards to the dark type, I have a varied record. There's one dark type in my story, who's really sweet and gentle and timid, but then there are some others who aren't very nice at all. Just comes down to the individual, I guess.

But, yeah, I do like the sound of your idea. Should be worth a read. Also definitely good for a change of subject.
