DP186-Ash vs. Paul

Once the full battles begin, the normal rules for an episode no longer apply. Let's take a look in the past and see how they did it.

EP269: mostly setup, and about half the Gary battle
EP270: second half, and the very beginning of the Harrison battle
EP271: most the battle vs. Harrison
EP272: battle ends, league conclusion

AG128: random COTD, half vs. Katie
AG129: second half, and the beginning of vs. Morrison
AG130: rest of the Morrison battle, and beginning vs. Tyson
AG131: Tyson battle and league conclusion (this one sounds more unceremonious than other league closing, it was pretty fast)

You know, I never noticed that the full battles each took up four eps for both leagues in which they took place. And Hoenn was 3 full battles, but note how I said they had to close the league fast in that instance. Now we look to August's four eps, starting with this one. Will they all be league eps? It looks promising.

So it's probably Ash VS Paul in DP 186-187 (August's 2 out of 4 eps) and then Ash VS LT in DP 188-189
Then September's first two eps DP 190-191 will probably be the final 2 eps of DP after the League
I actually hope each of Paul/LT battles will take one ep and a half - this way together they'd be 3 eps DP 186-188 and August's last ep DP 189 will be after the League
I think that DP has to get 3 eps for its final in order for it not to be rushed... I want one ep for Brock, one ep and half for Dawn and half an ep for Ash to go back to Pallet and then to Isshu
(this is all assuming BW start in September's third week (two days before the game release) and that it starts with one ep only and there are no breaks)

Alright its about time. I already thought that we'd be seeing the Paul battle next and I doubt a round is gonna be skipped between the third and fourth round so the vibe I am getting from this is that Ash will end up in the Top 4 this time around.

So Ash loses yet another league. I think its about time to retire from the series.

Obviously, the full battles start here. But why bring them in so late?

The league is really badly paced. Ash has no room to even use all those older pokemon in the opening.

Looks like DP will end with an anti-climax after all.

2 3-on-3 battles = 6 Pokémon
2 Full Battles = 12 Pokémon
Total: 18 Pokémon can get on screen battles, 3 more can get Top 32 short scenes of skipped still shots as a additional bonus and possibly 6 more in the probably skipped Top 8 full battle
Only 16 Poké are shown in the OP so each of them (other than possibly Snorlax since apparently Ash wanted Heracross and not it) will get at least one battle

Also, Scott, stop saying you'll stop watching... you say that every time something you don't like happens and then stay and continue to watch anyway...

Very disappointing. They still won't have Ash win a league and he'll only get in Top 4 at best now. Horrible.

DP feels like a complete waste.

Already? I was hoping for a waiting period between Conway and Paul (like another battle possibly). At least build up the hype for the Ash vs. Paul battle. I feel like this league is going by so fast, we're only 4 episodes into the league and we're already starting this battle. Not to mention, we only saw Ash battle twice. In previous leagues, I'm pretty sure he battled more than that before facing one of his main rivals. Well, we'll see what happens. It is a bummer knowing that Ash will only win one of 6 vs. 6 battles but hopefully we get summaries and stuff to explain what's going on. I am curious to see who Ash will use against Paul. The pokemon that make up his Sinnoh team or some of those pokemon with reserves?

So we waited 200 episodes for another anti-climax? What's the point to this show, again?

LOL

the grand festival happened so fast and now... the league gets the same treatment. it's sad, 'cause you'd think the series would have the most epic finale ever, hence everything that's happened throughout the saga. kind of ironic... all we get is a rushed finale. the most epic battles we were expecting will not happen at all. the elite four foreshadowing was pretty much futile.

Since I don't see the writers wasting the two extra slots on Staraptor and Gible, which have already had League airtime, I predict that Muk and Glalie will take their place. I also think that Paul will at the very least replace Ursaring with one of his reserves (of which we've only seen a few), and that Feraligatr would be ideal for the role.

No. I don't see Ash using anything other than his Sinnoh team, including Gliscor.

This is why Gible is used in the Conway battle right before this.

You just want to have something else to complain about, don't you?

The fact that we waited 200 episodes and 4-years for another anti-climax? Yeah, its annoying.

If Sinnoh wasn't stretched out to the point of absurdity and the league wasn't so short and rushed, and it didn't seem like Ash was going to lose due to a dues ex Darkrai in the league, yeah I wouldn't be complaining.

The writers really screwed up the end of DP. It now makes this entire saga a complete waste.

Scott I hope you're right I really want to see that scorpion bat come back and kick some serious butt. My biggest hope would be to leave Pikachu out of the battle kinda like he was left out of the Gary match and replace him with something else.

Trust me, we've waited the same length for the climactic battle before. Johto had three eps for the round robin, after which he immediately fought Gary. Hoenn had one ep for one vs. one, and one and a half eps for double battles. Then another one and a half for Katie before he faced Morrison. (mostly four eps total, with the battle beginning at the end of that fourth one) Too fast? I think not.

The difference is Ash has a lot of older pokemon this time, so that's why it feels rushed.

I do think it's weird that the league seems rushed. From what we read about it a long time ago, it seemed like this league would be drawn out and filled with drama and excitement and awesome battles. I'm kinda concerned for it at this point. I mean I'm sure the Ash vs. Paul battle and even though Ash vs. LT battle are going to be awesome, but I was thinking that the whole league could've been a bit more drawn out than it seems to be.

Anyway, in terms of this battle, I do prefer to see Ash's whole Sinnoh team battle. They've traveled with him in this region and represent Ash's Sinnoh journey. Just like how Ash's rivalry with Paul was an important aspect in Ash's adventure in Sinnoh, so were the pokemon Ash had in his team.

At the same time, I do see that the inclusion of Staraptor and Gible in the earlier battles make it seem that Ash would have to use the reserves. Which I don't mind at all. And considering the limited screentime and battles, I'd rather see 2 reserves replace Staraptor and Gible than see them shafted in like a couple of screenshots of skipped battles. My guesses for the pokemon if Ash will use reserves...I'd choose Glalie and Donphan personally. Both of them are strong pokemon and have advantages over some of Paul's main battlers (like Torterra and Electivire respectively). Not to mention, I want to see what new moves and other new stuff they've got and I'd prefer seeing them here than in a short 3 vs. 3 battle.
