Review DP188: Conclusion of Rival Battle! Satoshi VS Shinji!!

Yes, you should know the usual line by now.

-Aaah recaps where would be we without you?
-Urrgh band version.
-If you miss one hun, rest will pin you down! *shot*
-Fire Fang... Yeah,..-
-BURNING DRAPION!!111!
-...And it fails quickly and finally.
-Yes, Electric-type moves won't affect Gliscor!
-... But that doesn't mean rocks can't hurt it!
-Tentacle-tail hentai.
-Bye Scorpion-bat. You will be remembered fondly.
-Aaah good old Pikachu vs. Electivire showdown. Classical rivals are always the best.
-Hop on those rocks Pikachu! He does that a lot, doesn't he?
-Pikachu won't go down soon! Thank god for that.
-Volt Tackle? Please tell me it is not true...
-THANK GOD. All we need is a "just as planned" now.
-Paul is too old for your tricks Ashy-boy! He never forgets them and finds ways of countering them!
-TR... You shouldn't be eating what you are going to sell...
-Oh man, Electivire makes Thunder the coolest move ever.
-Wait, is it me or Infernape looked like it took Poison damage? With those purple electricity things... AWESOME. Tomioka I love you <3.
-Don't you love how Electivre evades Mach Punch? If you don't, then you need more sense of humor and sadism.
-Lol that pose. Electvire, I am strarting to like you now.
-Fried Monkey. My favourite.
-Especially the ones that burns themselves!
-You know a battle is heated when rivals react at the same time!
-Hmm... blue and yellow covering the skies... hmm...
-Even though that final scene is kind of cliché, it is still fucking awesome. Especaily with glowing eyes of doom.
-Yeah, good battle Electivire.
-Infernape, stop stealing screentime and let your owners talk. You can scream in pain later.
-Seeing Paul's Pokémon both sad and happy in the same episode... Either I am high or Reggie can turn any Pokémon into teddy bears. Yeah, and SWALOT CAMEO!
-"Champion!" Oh god, Jun you really became a running gag.
-Sunset makes Shinji's face and hair shiny. Very shiny.
-Obviously, you will rechallange your father Pyramid King.
-NAAAH NOT SOOTHE BELLS WTF IS THIS?!
-Dramatic shot is Dramatic, wait where's Totodile?
Ok, I really liked this episode if you couldn't tell already. Especially towards very end it became more suspenseful. Animation was good, nice to see Cynthia comment about their bond , Paul/Ash scenes were great. Too bad we don't and won't hear Charles Goodshow at all, but w/e. If I had a complaint, it would be no Soothe Bells.

So yeah, one of the greatest battles in the series I say.

I looked at the pictures of this episode and it does look interesting, Infernape looks weird in the anime but it did kick some butt on Electivire though lol.

Just occured to me this may be Paul's and Cynthia's very last episode, unless Paul (Although I think this new kid we seen could be Ash's rival, but maybe not) travels in Isshu and becomes his rival again. As for Cynthia unless she has a role like Lance did (And not give the Isshu Champion a one episode filler like Lance and Steven) or she appears in the battle against Darkrai episode then I wonder if this is her very last episode.

And sounds like Paul had major character development, it's nice that the two have a common ground now

Paul could actually win against Brandon this time now that he doesn't hold the Regi trio anymore.

But I assume Paul will have to take the proper path to get to Brandon: challenge all the Frontier Brains in the right order.

I'm glad Paul got a good closure and didn't really get a rushed good-bye. He had a very nice scene between him and Paul ^^ I hope Barry gets a good send off too.

So... was that an actual attack Electivire used to tear up the ground?

I don't get the Soothe Bell thing either. I sure hope you people enjoyed the episode despite not seeing some rinky dinky item.

I should mention... if you can't appreciate this battle, you don't deserve to call yourself a fan. Plain and simple. I suppose liking other battles is fine, but dismissing this fight, not just in the Infernape vs. Electivire segment but also the fight in its entirety, is foolish. My gosh... the amount of attention and power and drama that went into this battle reigns supreme over all else.

I don't know what Paul said to Electivire after it defeated Gliscor, but since it seems to be a some sort of compliment about the well done job, it made me smile. Paul has changed nicely during these years. Anyway the battle was quite awesome and well done, specific the last part. Go, Infernape, go!
Wish I could understand Japanese better, now I don't have a clue, what Paul and Ash talked after the battle. Anyway, Paul's departure was so lovely. It suited for his character so well and now his journey is actually just in the new begin.

Here's how Ash and Paul's final conversation went:

Cynthia: When I saw those two battling today, I was able to sense something between them. That thing was a bond between them.
Brock: Those two feuded with each other, but they were able to grow together and recognize each other, and thus a bond was born. Their battle today was indeed the greatest.
Dawn: So they create such an opportunity...

Ash: Paul!
Paul: Infernape has become strong.
Ash: Ah! Infernape became strong! ...oh, you're leaving already?
Paul: I lost. There's no point in me staying here. I plan on asking Brandon for a rematch soon.
Ash: I see. Good luck!
Paul: Yes... You too.

Cynthia: Paul... Ash... I'm looking forward to and waiting for when you two win a champion league.

Paul: See you later.
Ash: Paul! We'll definitely battle again!

I thought it was a great close to their rivalry, I just wish i knew what they we're saying, but it did seem like Paul was complementing and thanking Electivire, and the final scene did serm like a good closure. Damn it why can't the writers dub it faster!!!

But now Ash has to deal with that f***** Darkrai!

Re: DP 188 "Conclusion of Rival Battle! Satoshi VS Shinji!!" Preview Thread

This is also my prediction.
While I'm obviously looking forward to the battle itself, I'm caring even more about Ash and Paul's interactions after the battle.

So, yeah. I'm not fussed about seeing the beginning of the Takuto battle.

Judging from the screen shots from the episode Paul will smile after being defeated.

The interaction is going to be interesting indeed.

This was definitely the best battle in the entire run of all Pokemon series. Shigeru vs Satoshi pales in comparison to this. And the widescreen on widescreen at the final moments of Goakazaru vs Elekible... wow... just wow. Iwane, you did an spectacular job.

And omg, the final moments after the battle where Shinji tries to compliment Goakazaru but gets interrupted... it made me smile so much.

I was all teary-eyed when Satoshi and Shinji said goodbye during sunset. Forget stupid shipping, forget the soothe bells: this is how a great rivalry should end. It was the perfect conclusion to the best rival in Pocket Monsters.

This is exactly my thoughts.
It was just, so awesome. The goodbye scene was nice, and the second Shinji waved, it completely hit me that this great saga is finished. The rivalry was the best out of whatever the writers have come up with in the past. The fact that we may never see Shinji again, or atleast for ages is pretty strange. Sure, his story has been pretty well wrapped up now, but the way it was handled was just great. Especially the hand wave, and how he tried to compliment Infernape but was interrupted - and then he smiled! Then when Ash came running to him, he said what he had wanted to say. & the fact that all his Pokemon do care for him.. aww.
