Gym Discussion/Speculation

Everyone seems to be bored of Water gyms. There haven't been a Generation without them. Hate me if you want but I say that there shouldn't be a Water gym, but a Water Elite Four instead. It has never been done.
Wallace was the Champion in Emerald.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that. Well, technically he isn't part of the Elite Four :p But you're right.

Figure I may as well throw in my own Gym wishlist too :p

Gym 01 ~ Bug Gym//Female Leader ~ I think Bug's a pretty good choice for a first Gym, especially if they use the local regional bug plus one extra, serving as nice gentle introduction to the concept of Gyms for new players. Having a female leader will give older fans something new to see here too.

Gym 02 ~ Grass Gym//Male Leader ~ Grass is pretty under-rated Gym-wise imo. Don't get me wrong, I love Erika and Gardenia, but they're both pretty underwhelming imo. Also, Grass as a type serves as a nice follow-up to the Bug Gym too and can be made diverse enough to give players more of a challenge. I'd prefer a male Leader for a change. I know that Cilan is a male Grass Gym Leader, but I don't really count him as too much of a specialist in the type.

Gym 03 ~ Ground Gym//Female Leader ~ Having Bug and Grass as the first two, Ground makes a good change of pace for people relying too much on their Fires and Flyers for the first too Gyms. I'd really like to see a female Leader here, maybe someone like an Egyptian styled beauty queen, almost counterpart to Elesa.

Gym 04 ~ Steel Gym//Female Leader ~ I'd like to see Steel used again, but with a really strong, muscular female Gym Leader.

Gym 05 ~ Ghost Gym//Male Leader ~ I think the Ghost type, like Grass, is pretty under-rated actually. In all honesty, Morty and Fantina didn't really come across as actual specialists in the type more beyond their names. Morty is apparently known as the "mystic seer of the future" and, to me, that suits more a Psychic specialist and, with regards to Fantina, I think they really could've given her any type and it would've been fine - there was no reason iirc for her Ghost type specialism. Plus, in Gen I we had a Ghost E4 member, Gen II a Ghost Gym, Gen III a Ghost E4 member, Gen IV a Ghost Gym and then in Gen V a Ghost E4 member - going with a Ghost gym again in this Gen would see that pattern continue and I like details like that.

Gym 06 ~ Poison Gym//Male Leader ~ I'd really like to see a new Male Poison specialist now that Koga is not a Gym Leader. I'd also like to see them take the Poison trainer away from what's previously been done with Poison specialists - ninjas, a rocker and the majority of the villainous team grunts. What I want is something gentler for this trainer and his Gym.

Gym 07 ~ Dark Gym//Female Leader ~ So we've had three E4 members using Dark types, one female and two males. I'd like to see a female Dark specialist for all the reasons everyone has already listed.

Gym 08 ~ Normal Gym//Male Leader ~ I want Normal to be the last Gym because, as someone stated earlier, I really think it deserves more recognition. Normal Pokémon, imo, feel super under-rated and under-used. There is so much potential, but really most of the Pokémon this type (single-typed ones I mean) are largely pretty useless battle-wise. I'm electing a Male leader simply to balance out the genders of the Gym Leaders :p

As for the E4 (cos I might as well throw this in here too), I'd like to see:

E4 01 ~ Flying type//Male ~ someone with a high-end cool factor, maybe some rich go-getter who just can't get enough of a thrill.

E4 02 ~ Electric type//Female ~ someone who breaks the stereotype, opposite of Elesa, like a mechanic or electrician... kinda like an Electric type Maylene.

E4 03 ~ Rock type//Female ~ I'd love to see Rock type get Elite status given the kind-of status it currently has with its specialists - all were the first Gym Leaders of their regions and I wanna see that change.

E4 04 ~ Ice type//Male ~ I want to see Ice get E4 again for similar reasons to Ghost getting a Gym. Every Gen has had an Ice type specialist, three have been Gym Leaders and two have been members of the Elite Four. I'd like that evened out and kept for tradition/pattern's sake.

As an additional note, someone previously had suggested seeing double battle Gym Leaders again (like Tate and Liza). My only request is that, if they do do this gain, make them of two differing types as opposed to both using the same. More specifically, make them opposing types like Poison and Ground or Water and Fire - something really tough and challenging. I'd also like to maybe see this concept stretched into the E4 or the Champion - it'd be awesome to have two Champions who battled together using opposing types!!
I agree with everything you posted. It all makes sense and for a great change to the gym leaders and E:4/Champion.

@Garland; honestly the fire area seems more like an Elite Four, Champion or mountain dungeon to me.

Based on trailer #1...Grass, Fire, Bug

Like the user above me had said the pillars of fire are just too over done for a gym. The room also seems very high, much higher than any gyms. If a gym is high it tends to involve a linear puzzle to progress from top to bottom. Plus the lack of trainers in the one area don't help it. I'd say either villainous team or Elite 4. Maybe Champion even.

Then, I'd like to see an Elite 4 based around strategy instead of type. Maybe Sun, Rain, Hail and Sandstorm with a Trick Room Champion?

Oh yes, this is something I'd definitely like to see. It would make you think more about what you do and how to get around things (unless you just sweep through the teams cause you're already overpowered or something) rather than just thinking about type matchups. I think a weather-based E4 with a TR Champion could give off a more serious attempt to a battle/competitive-like feeling, and I'm all for that.

I mean, even if you're a "specialist of a specific type", only using Pokemon of that type only gets you so far.

Well, not particularly thrilled about another potential Bug gym leader since we've had one for the last few games. But that could change depending on if we get some neat new Bug-types to fill the gym with, plus an interesting gym leader themselves.

The house does seem like it could be Psychic, but I have no idea. I'm fine with a Psychic gym because that means no Psychic-type elite four member.

Not sure about the tree; it does look like it could be a puzzle. So maybe a Grass gym is in.

Like someone earlier posted, I'm wondering if they are going to repeat the Striaton gym in BW terms of having the first gym be the gym strongest against our starter. B2W2 decided to go neutral with Normal, so maybe they considered it was too challenging for beginngers, I'm not sure. I don't particularly care if we do get it or not, but I wonder whether they would consider it good and want to reuse it for the start of another new gen.

I wouldn't mind another Poison gym aslong as there are decent Poison-types in the region for them to use.

You should read @Eneci's post, it is only a few posts up.

Heh. Reminds me how everyone used to think Bugsy was a girl when Gen II first came out.

Not that I'm saying it's impossible, but how gentle can you get exactly with a type that defines itself by the suffering of others? Poison is basically Dark-lite when it comes to image.

They should totally make the champion or last E4 a Normal specialist with super-strong mons, like Whitney's Miltank on steroids ;P

I'd like to see this happen w/Triple & Rotation battles, with the leader/E4 in question using a different style depending on the version.

I'd like to see them go with a first gym like the Unova ones again, where either all three starters are put at an equal disadvantage or they're all neutral. It's really annoying to either have your starter choices limited by the early bosses or to have to keep your starter out of all the important battles until a certain point.

As irritating as Tate and Iza were, a gym leader(s) specializing in triple or rotation battles is something I would like to see. I also feel as if they should have made Cilan, Cress and Chilli triple battle specialists as they certainly would have fit the bill... but that would only work if they were gym leaders encountered later on in the game, and probably wouldn't work so well with rotation battles being the focus of a different version. But ignoring Gen V, a triple/rotation battle gym leader is something I would not mind seeing.

Champion Joseph, Normal type specialist. He tends to brag about his signature Raticate being in the top percentage. :p

In all seriousness though, a normal type champion could be pretty awesome, especially with strong normal types like Snorlax, Ursaring, etc.

I just love how they really broke some of the preconceptions associated with the Dark type with Pokémon such as Absol (warning of disasters) and Darkrai (misunderstood) and the likes. I'd like to see maybe a Poison//Grass type that could be more medicinal in nature (didn't curatives and modern medicine all originate with toxins and what-have-you?) or maybe Poison//Water type that helps with removing pollution or a Poison//Steel type home cleaning thing? I just feel that there's a lot of wasted potential there with the Poison type to make it something more than what it is, something nicer and friendlier - they could at least try.

Poison needs it more imo, but I'd love to see this extend throughout Gen VI - break tradition with the Gym Leaders and do something that makes the older fans go "huh, didn't see that one coming" - surprise us by stepping outside of the boxes that have been built around the types by both the designers and the fandom.

Also, @AkuromaKun ~ I've seen that image floating about here and there, but I don't really get it. Like, I can clearly see the visual link between the Unova Gym symbol and the one being used in Gen VI and I get the DNA connection theory. What I don't get is the Johto and Kanto Gym symbols - they're both different and, as far as I can see, don't really contribute to the argument being put across by the creator - what am I missing?

We just don't know. Its more then likely that the gym symbol is the same for every region now, and not just the Unova symbol, but even so for me personally there is a tiny sliver of hope that this is the case, what with Golurk statues and an apparent focus on Unova Pokemon still. And I know that can be because they do not want to reveal gen 6 Pokemon, but a Golurk statue is still something odd. It is good to note though that the screen is likely the beginning of the gym, with the female PC likely going back to the entrance of the gym or something.

Rumor has it Joey's Rattata has 31 IVs in all its stats.

I'd like to see:

1) Female Bug-type Gym Leader.
2) Poison-type Gym Leader.
3) Ground-type Gym Leader.
4) Ice-type Gym Leader.
5) Fire-type Gym Leader.
6) Psychic-type Gym Leader.
7) Steel-type Gym Leader.
8) Dark-type Gym Leader.

Elite Four (in no specific order):

Electric
Rock
Grass
Normal

Champion:

Various types.

I think that could just be the generic symbolization for a Gym, I could be wrong but I can't see Unova tieing in with these games after two consecutive appearances in the previous Generation.

Anyway, this is what I'm expecting/hoping for but not necessarily in the order;

Grass Gym
Bug Gym
Dark Gym
Ground Gym
Steel Gym
Psychic Gym
Rock Gym
Fire Gym (Although it could be an E4 room)

Mi ideal set:

Gym Leaders (no particular order):
-Poison
-Fire
-Bug
-Steel
-Ground
-Dark
-Psychic/Ice/Ghost/Dragon/Fighting
-Psychic/Ice/Ghost/Dragon/Fighting

Elite 4:
-Rock
-Flying
-Grass
-Electric

Champion:
-Normal

OMG I want a Poison Gym for this Generation too ^^. I always thought that Argenta would give an awesome Poison Gym Leader. Would love to see that happening :)

Awesome!! I love Argenta so much - she is my favourite Frontier Brain <3 <3 <3 Looks-wise, she always struck me as more of a Psychic type trainer (similar colours and designs as Will and Lucian) or a Flying type trainer, as she seems to have a bit of a old-style pilot look to her.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Poison GL with a design similar to hers though, like an older female to balance out Koga a bit (seeing as both Janine and Roxie were pretty young seeming).

She's my 2nd favorite Frontier Brain (Spenser it's my 1st. Love his concept). Yeah a older female Poison Gym Leader would be tots awesomesauce :p
