Oh Pokémon Producers/Writing Staff, what a tangled web you weave...

Apparently, upon seeing a Caterpie again, Ash dies in peace.

I actually think Ash's Butterfree won't return, as sad as it might be. We'll get some heavy flashback, Ash will spend time with Caterpie remembering the first Pokémon he caught. As the episode progresses, Caterpie will evolve into Metapod and then into Butterfree and then it will be time to say goodbye, once more.

It would mostly be completely unfitting for the nature of this show. The writers have no reason to leave out the original Butterfree from an episode that clearly revolves around Ash's history with it. Butterfree didn't die; we know that it went to a place exactly like Migration Island.

Says who? If the summary does say Butterfree went there we don't know. It could just be Satoshi getting nostalgic with the Caterpie speed evolving and leaving and not the physical flesh and blood real deal. "Until We Meet Again" is a term used often in anime to say until the day we actually cross paths once more, it could end with Satoshi saying one day he know he'll see his old friend again after seeing the Caterpie evolve. Of course the Caterpie could be the child of his Butterfree, we don't know, it's not far'fetch'd for it not to appear however.

Says who?
It was established in Butterfree's last episode that it was going to migrate with the other Butterfree. Regardless of whether or not it is in Migration Island right now, that is the sort of place where it was supposed to mate.

I am questioning the rationale behind such a narrative. What is the point of writing an episode about Ash bonding with another Butterfree and only hoping to reunite with his own? Are we going to wait 15 more years before that happens? And if the writers don't want it to ever happen, then why does this episode need to exist?

I hope you're right, the title seems to suggest it - though it could easily imply the Butterfree evolved from this Caterpie.

This certainly makes a lot of sense.

I guess I shouldn't be doubting Butterfree's return. :/

What I highly dislike is that they're making us wonder about this, which they also did with Charizard and are still doing with Mewtwo. It's getting old.
Honestly, with Charizard ... it was way more obvious. He was confirmed to appear in the movie so it had to be Ash's.

That didn't prevent some people from speculating that it would belong to Cilan or Iris, as nonsensical as that sounds. And either way, a lot of people thought that the Charizard episode might just foreshadow the return.

That was pretty much only you-know-who , why would Episode N introduce another Charizard outta the blue and have it battle a Dragonite? It's obvious it's the same Mewtwo, Smash did a retrospective on Movie 1 and we see Rocket Scientist in the manga flashback. Is this about the new VA?

Actually, the manga adaptation doesn't even reference Team Plasma; the scientists are completely generic. I'm guessing that the backstory hadn't been finalized by the time the script was given to the mangaka.

Is this about the new VA?
Yes, many people have been thrown off by the new VA, or more specifically her gender. I'm a little surprised that you're sure it's the same Mewtwo and yet your take on the Butterfree situation is different.

Well, thanks to Sushi from SPPf, we got a translation of that scan and other summaries.

Sushi said:
Summary: On Migration Island, Ash remembers the Caterpie that once traveled with him.

Translation Picture 2: Having arrived on Migration Island, Ash and his friends witness the moment a swarm of Metapod, the "Cocoon Pokémon", evolve into Butterfree, the "Butterfly Pokémon". The group is moved, but then a single Caterpie, the "Worm Pokémon", appears before them...
- Caption: This Caterpie seems to have failed to keep up with the swarm's evolution.

Translation Picture 3: Hang on, Butterfree! Ash's special training!

Ash finds a Caterpie that has been separated from its swarm. He does his best to help it return to its swarm!

He wants to help Caterpie, which does as it pleases! Caterpie has quite a lazy personality. At this rate, will it be able to evolve into Butterfree at all?

- Caption 1: Ash takes an afternoon nap with Caterpie... Hey, are they really going to be okay?!
- Caption 2: Its companions evolve into Butterfree one after another and fly away!

Pink box:
Caterpie is a Pokémon that brings back memories for Ash!
It's the first wild Pokémon that Ash got. It was a precious friend that grew up under his care.
- Caption: After evolving into Butterfree, it parted with Ash to set off with its companion.

This image shows Butterfree making an appearance. Judging from the screenshot, it's possible it's going to be Ash's.

It's basically Ash training a very lazy Caterpie so it can evolve into Butterfree and we get flashbacks of Ash's Butterfree. Still have no clue whether Ash's Butterfree will return or not.

I don't know what will happen, but I can't see how anyone could justify an episode about Ash bonding with another Butterfree that has nothing to do with the original one. The "kids don't know about Ash's Butterfree" excuse doesn't work since the flashbacks will obviously be blatant, and Butterfree's farewell episode was recently shown on Smash.

Yeah so Ash's Butterfree probably won't actually appear. It actually reminds me of that Caterpie filler from the beginning of Battle Frontier.

It seems more and more likely that Ash's Butterfree won't be appearing. Judging by what the summary says, I imagine Ash will just train the Caterpie for the whole episode and it will evolve into Butterfree at the end.

The Caterpie could still easily turn out to be Butterfree's offspring. The summary isn't supposed to give away the entire plot.

I agree with that Sadly Ash's Butterfree is not Appearing in My Opinion.
