Twitch Plays Pokémon = Season 11 Poster
The Twitch Plays Pokémon channel celebrates its tenth anniversary this week with the launch of a brand new season, kicking off with a return to the very first game featured on the channel, Pokémon Red. In this first Twitch Plays Pokémon run of 2024, players will once again attempt to complete the game by entering button inputs in the channel's Twitch chatroom. This run is intended to kick off a series of runs in which they "intend to visit every known Pokémon region".

Unlike previous runs, the Democracy mode will not be available. The Democracy mode was originally implemented after players were unable to proceed through the spin tile maze in the Rocket Hideout, allowing the chat to vote on which button is pressed, requiring a supermajority to activate and a majority to return to the Anarchy mode that Twitch Plays Pokémon is best known for. Moreover, these runs will be played on the original hardware, and be shown on a CRT television.

Twitch Plays Pokémon started as a proof of concept social experiment in 2014 that quickly went viral. Since then, the channel has played numerous official Pokemon games and ROM hacks, including two created specifically for the stream, Anniversary Red and Anniversary Crystal. Besides these, the channel has also played various "side-games", and runs a betting game based on Pokemon Battle Revolution where two AI controlled opponents are pitted against each other. The first stream won a Guinness World Record for most participants in a single-player online video game with a total of 1165140. The Helix Fossil meme from the original run was referenced in the official French translation of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, where Brawly says, "J'ai découvert le secret de la vraie puissance en fixant un Nautile pendant des jours et des jours...", which translates to "I discovered the secret of true power by staring at a Helix Fossil for days and days...". The original run's team was also referenced in posts on Pokémon's official TikTok and Twitter channels in March last year.
