It's not Mewtwo. From an email from TPCi:

This new Pokémon shares many traits with Mewtwo and it’s suspected that the newly discovered Pokémon has a connection with Mewtwo—a powerful Pokémon that debuted in Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue.

What is this new Pokémon? How will you encounter it in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y? When will you know more? One thing is clear, your readers will certainly want to debate the meaning of this new Pokémon!

I've emailed TPCi to see if they could clarify it, but the language used makes it seem like it's NOT Mewtwo.

I think it's just them being ambiguous. Formes are basically evolutions for pokemon they don't want to evolve, so they just treat them as new pokemon entirely.

I stand by my reasoning in the Pokemon Smash thread, it is Mewtwo either as a new forme which is always advertised as a new Pokemon, or for the first time ever a legendary evolution of Mewtwo.

They are not going to cram Mewthree in a title of a movie named Mewtwo's Awakening. That implies something happens to Mewtwo, not another clone coming out of nowhere.

TPCi's PR was very direct. Even the file name for the images is "New Pokémon".

I don't remember the English sites ever calling new forms "new Pokémon", they always specified they were alternate.

If this is indeed a separate Pokémon, I take back my "tampered with a classic" comment, but otherwise it still stands.

If it is a new Pokémon and not an alt form of Mewtwo, I'll be very happy, but for now, I'll be thinking of it as a alt form so I don't get my hopes dashed. :I

I didn't email their general customer service, I've emailed the PR company that TPCi use for these kind of announcements. I'm not sure if they will give me anything potentially confidential, but they've been very helpful in the past (like confirming that the Keldeo movie Pokémon TV showing was US only).

I just asked them if they can confirm if it's a new Pokémon (which I'm now 100% sure it is anyway). For now, I'm dubbing it Mewnew though.

I don't really mind whichever one it is. But I'm staying skeptical until I 100% know what its relation to Mewtwo is. I think it's gotta be at least somehow connected to Mewtwo may it be a new forme or evolution. Because if this is in the movie it's kind of weird for them to call it Mewtwo's Awakening just to introduce this totally different Pokemon. But we'll see.
