Best Starters out of Kanto, Johto, etc.

Kanto (G1) - Bulbasaur
Kanto (G3) - Charmander (yay Metal Claw)
Jhoto - Totodile
Hoenn - Mudkip
Sinnoh - Infernape (This totally goes against my "Ice Trainer" image)!
 
Who care about how a pokemon looks, it's all about coming up with the best move set to make the best pokemon.

Gen 1: Charmander(best of all starters and best evolutionary line ever)
Gen 2: Tie between Cyndaquil and Totodile
Gen 3: Treecko(the grass version of charmander and its evolutionary line)
Gen 4: Tie between Chimchar and Turtwig

Actually, Nomura, if we're basing it on "the best move set" and such, then Charizard wouldn't even be the "best of all starters" or "best evolutionary line ever". Charizard's type makes it weak to water, electric, and rock moves. Not to mention it's 4x weakness to stealth rock. While Infernape is not only more resistent to stealth rock, it contains a more diverse move pool (being fire/fighting), and has greater speed. Charizard with Bely Drum would be the only thing that would make Charizard stronger is if you give it Belly Drum and use it as a sweeper, but the moment it gets a significant strike, it's just about done. Infernape is a better choice.
 
kanto: bulbasaur and squirtle
johto: chikorita
hoenn: mudkip
sinnoh:turtwig
its not that i love grass pokemon i just like pokemon that walk on four legs and most of the starters that walk on four legs are grass type.
 
Well, I am always a Water specialist in the games, barely catching anything else.
So, of course, it is
Kanto : Squirtle
Johto : Totodile
Hoenn : Mudkip
Sinnoh : Piplup

Mudkip is prob the best out of em all though...
 
This is how I see it:

Kanto: Bulbasaur

The easiest Starter to use for beginners since it's grass-type nature is great at the first three gyms.

Personal Choice: Charmander

A pain to have for the early part of the game, but I always loved Charmander.

Johto: Cyndaquil

A great Pokémon to have early in the game and one of the strongest Pokémon to have on your team, as well.

Personal Choice: Totodile

It's harder to find great Fire and Grass types then water, but again I always loved my Totodile.

Hoenn: Torchic

For the simple reason that it's an unstoppable force against the Hoenn Elite Four (in the Ruby/Sapphire versions, anyway).

Personal Choice: Mudkip

Because Swampert is a tank in battle. I also have a soft spot for Sceptile because it's arguable the best Grass Type Starter ever for it's speed.

Sinnoh/Personal Choice: Turtwig

Because like Swapert, Torterra is an unstoppable tank in battle.
 
Kanto = Squirtle.

Johto = Chikorita

Hoenn = Torchic

I don't really like any of the starters from Sinnoh.

Kanto: Charmander
Johto: Totodile
Hoenn: Grovyle
Sinnoh: Turtwig ( I think, I'm not sure about this one)

Why nobody chose suirtle in kanto? is it that weak? I chose it and my blastoise was freaking awesome!!
Johto --> cyndaquil (looooove typhlosion)
Hoenn --> torchic (i chose treecko, and it wasn't really strong)
Sinnoh --> chimchar (PLEASE NOT PIPLUP!! EMPOLEON is soooo ugly!!!)
 
Kanto - Charmander (I love Charizard, but I don't like Blastoise or Venusaur.)
Johto - Cyndaquil / Chikorita (I don't like Chikorita, but I love Meganium).
Hoenn - Treecko (Torchic and Mudkip are soooooooo overrated.
Sinnoh - Turtwig! (I LOOOOOOOOVE Torterra!! <3)
 
Well, its mostly to the players who play the game, all Pokémon starters are the same, except different types.

Mostly, I'm in love with fire types, on their full evolved form I like them even more :).
