Anyone watching Trump's lawyers debase themselves today?

This immediately popped in my mind:
The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.
I've never read any of Orwell's works, yet I always get the references.

I had "Animal Farm" in school for compulsory reading. After reading that I bought a copy of 1984.

It's one of the most mis-quoted books in history. Online wingnuts love to cite a book they've never read to defend their right to act like shitheads without suffering any consequences. In reality, Orwell was explicitly against authoritarianism and propaganda. He would be horryfied by the rise of "alternative facts" among Republicans. That, of course, didn't stop pundits on Fox News to claim that his book was just about how communism is bad and capitalism is good (Orwell himself was a socialist who fought for republican Spain against the fascist coup).

GOP senators threatened to wreck the Senate if their cult leader isn't acquitted.

And ofc they acquitted Trump when he didn't deserve to be acquitted. The vote was 57-43, with 7 Republican Senators voting to convict him. These include Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, Ben Sasse, Lisa Murkowski, Pat Toomey, Bill Cassidy, and surprisingly Richard Burr. At least we know 7 Republicans had a backbone in this moment.

And now unless they can find a way to bar him from holding public office through the 14th amendment, we have to worry about Trump running in 2024.

Welp, despite the most lackluster My Cousin Vinny performance of the defense attorneys gave in only three hours, the most scathing and detailed arguments of the Prosecution which used all sixteen hours which still should turned more than two people around; they acquitted that asshole. I know it was a foregone conclusion but still it's stupid.

Well, time for the state governments and maybe Interpol to try and fix the failure of today.

Sad but true. Just goes to show how spineless the GOP has become. At least a few showed actual backbone today. Hopefully we can peg him with the 14th amendment or we'll have to face the nightmare (and his cult) all over again. I really hope the GOP loses all credibility because of this, as at this point they don't deserve to be respected by the people anymore for their spinelessness against a bully like Trump, and that's putting it nicely.

On the flip side, at least Trump is still banned from Facebook and Twitter, otherwise we'd be hearing from him about his "great victory" for the next month at least. That at least limits the amount of time we have to hear from him or see his mug on-screen. Granted, it won't stop it, but at least it'll be better than what we had to endure for the past 4 years. That's at least one silver lining in all this.

I'm not even surprised in the least but it still pisses me off beyond belief. He just doesn't deserve to walk away from this free, but he somehow gets away with everything. It's so obvious for the entire world to see what kind of person Trump is, and the Republicans know it too, but he still gets away with it because party over country. Always.

Just... please let one of these other states that are supposed to go after him actually get him and hold him accountable. It's not good for anyone in the country for him to get away with everything, regardless of what party you're from.

Honestly,Mitt Romney is the only Republican Id remotely want to see run for President. He seems to be one of very few who honestly care about doing whats right for this country. I dont agree with his politics, and I wouldnt vote for him unless the Dem candidate was literally Satan, but got most all the rest of them are just evil.

This just sucks. I hate the government here.

I'd certainly rather have Mitt Romney as president than Trump for a 2nd term. I wouldn't agree with much of what he'd do, but at least he's shown he will do the right thing when it really matters. Also he's not a blatant narcissistic asshole. I can at least have some ounce of respect for him when he actually puts his oath and the country over his party. Also seeing him actually get up and march with people supporting Black Lives Matter does add to it. Certainly don't agree with him on a lot, but he gets a hell of a lot more respect from me than I have for the vast majority of the GOP.

That this impeachment would go nowhere was obvious from the start, what with most GOP senators being compromised. That doesn't mean it was wrong to push for it. We now have a very good picture of the events during the coup attempt. Which means there's very likely gonna be more investigation of 1/6 - they'll just happen separately from impeachment. Several congressional probes already underway. I wouldn't be surprised if a commission were set up.

Another reason for why it was good to push forward this doomed impeachment: it will cause further frictions and cannibalism among GOP politician. Already, the 7 senators who voted in favor are being smeared by the trump cultists.

Conservative Fox News host Laura Ingraham commented: “Prediction: none of the Republicans who voted in the affirmative today will speak at the 2024 GOP convention.”

...I have officially lost all respect for my country at this point. This is the guy who literally incited a friggin riot, ignored his country when it was dealing with a plague, separated immigrant children from their families, among other shit, and even with SOLID CONCRETE evidence of everything he's done, he's just...allowed to walk away scot free with little more than a slap on the wrist!?

Democracy and justice are officially dead in this country. If blatantly conspiring to overthrow the government because the election didn't go your way isn't enough to be charged guilty of treason, IDK what is. So disgusted with not only Trump, but the spineless Republican senators who refuse to do the right thing and hold him accountable for his actions, and none of them (not just Trump) deserve to hold public office again. The Founding Fathers are surely spinning in their graves like a gyroscope at this mess.

Very understandable from a game theory perspective.
Still incredibly sad that seeking to do the right thing will get such flak. And that it was obviously enough of an impediment to reach this non-conviction result.

TBH this is really a microcosm of how the justice system often plays out. Ask any public defender, they all have stories of how they lost cases even with the facts, evidence, and common sense on their side.

Astoundingly unfortunate. Justice systems are still run by people, and there are severe flaws in most existing systems that hold power over people's lives and livelihoods, aren't there. : (
