Pokemon Advanced Battle Episode 21: Who, What, When, Where, Wynaut

- Drew, "you seem to be forgetting that you have to win the Pacifidlog contest first" She's not forgetting it, she just knows her canonsueness will kick in and deliver her a totally unbelievable ribbon.

I liked the episode, mainly because of Drew and Jessie. The COTD (aka what's his name) was bland and boring, Ash and the boys weren't really interesting, so yeah...

Pokémon Advanced Battle Episode 23: Mean with Envy

- So Erika's fantasy is that they'll win a couple as a ribbon, split it in half and each keep there half... May's answer, "Like that could ever happen"
- Erika is ready to blow a gasket when seeing her BF make combinations with May
- Can we stop calling whose attack it is when Skitty uses assist. It's fire spin, we know it's Combusken... no need to say it all the time...
- Meowth's on fire!!!
- Marian/Vivian/Lilian, "Now's entry number 2, Juanita" I want her to win!!!!
- May, "After all this hard work and all this training, I'm gonna make it in" Irooooooony!!!

Can the wheels start turning now? Can the writers start to catch on that they have to make good appeals? Those weren't bad (well good compared to the crap so far, let's be honest, not compared to what's to come) but I've yet to actually see them bother to make this different than regular battling. The COTD are meh to be honest, Joshua needs to grow a pair and tell Erika to sod off and Eirka needs ritalin... bad. Also, Skitty? I mean Skitty? meh...

5 out of 10 It's a good start but still incredibly underwhelming appeal round.

Pokémon Advanced Battle Episode 24: Pacifidlog Jam

- Blizzard v Flamethrower and Blizzard wins... there goes believability...
- May's battling prowess cures Erika's jealousy and dissipates the doubt in her heart... cause this Canon Sue's just too good for this sinful Earth...
- Brock, "Assist huh" Gee Brock, your unenthusiam is rampant...
- May pulls Fire Spin in extremis using her sue powers...
- Brock, "That really was a great strategy to use in a contest" WTF, that wasn't strategy, that was pure dumb luck.

Oh Arceus, that was sorta painful. This was the last mini-tournament of regular battles in Hoenn I guess. I've yet to see a contest though... It went downhill after TR left. First of all, what's the point of making contests if it doesn't look different? Why? Second, May "earning" (sarcastic air quotes) her fifth ribbon with her brilliant strategy of spamming assist and relying on blind luck really paid off... So much for May having even one believable ribbon win in Hoenn... the Blizzard/Flamethrower standoff where Blizzard comes out on top (cause the tiny Skitty doesn't get blown away, but the big mighty Houndour who resists both attacks does...) The "rivals" (sarcasting air quotes make a comeback) were also excruciating to listen to... Erika's "Oh May you were really vibing with my BF and now I fully respect that you don't want to steal him and you've inspired me" spiel was wrist sliting worthy... I'm still waiting for any sign of personality from Joshua...

It's the exact same situation as it was with Chikorita. Ash saved Chikorita's life which changed Chikorita's mind of Ash. So the same happened here. I don't see what the badges have anything to with anything, since as I implied saving its life was the turning point of Snorunt's behavior.

And what did you expect, 100's of episode where Ash bonds with Snorunt before it became natural?

Besides didn't Ash battle Snorunt before catching it? Regardless of the "artificial" or "forced" relationship. Ash did catch Snorunt legitimately by battling it and throwing a Poke ball at it. Doesn't that supersede any opinions of Snorunt's "relationship" with Ash? Considering Ash didn't just throw a Poke ball and Snorunt willingly was let captured (Like Charmander, Squirtle, Gible, Chimchar, etc).

What do you exactly mean by Phanphy coming back made Date Expectations pointless?

This episode was ok but you could have had any pokemon in there replacing Donphan. Like say, Tropius that we hadn't seen yet at that point.

Instead the writers focused on a pokemon that recieve a filler in Johto and that we'll see ton of later. The foreshadowing for Phanphy could have been done at the League in the discussion with Oak with Oak saying, "Ash all your pokemon are in tip top shape, Phanphy is especially eager to help you in the League." and Ash chooses to stick with his Hoenn team.

The episode itself isn't pointless since May and Ash have some great character moments, the May/Max relationship is fleshed out, etc. Donphan's presence in this episode though...

It's the exact same situation as it was with Chikorita.

Not really, the writers didn't build up a relationship between Nurse Joy and Chikorita throughout the episode...

it implied saving its life was the turning point of Snorunt's behavior.

Nurse Joy said Snorunt refusing to give the badges back was because he liked playing with Ash... whom he met for 2 seconds... then Snorunt asked for a battle.

And what did you expect, 100's of episode where Ash bonds with Snorunt before it became natural?

How about making this one episode about Ash and Snorunt bonding as opposed to Snorunt and Joy interacting with Ash just caring about his badges...

It's just a minor thing that ticked me off... it's not the end of the world. It really just felt like the writers were just parachuting a pokemon on Ash and didn't really care to make it believable.

Very funny episode, Munchlax is an hilarious pokémon and I really like May outside of her contests!

- Why does Morrison have an extra hammock? Does he take guys to sleep in trees often?
- LOL at Munchlax being full...

You know what's missing here? Believable Ho Yay/Foe Yay... Seriously, it just lacks that je ne sais quoi that Ash/Gary had and that Ash/Paul will have... After watching this episode the first time around, I didn't care if we saw Morrison at the League or not and quite frankly, I still don't.

I facepalmed so many times during this episode it's not even funny. So we get an episode dedicated to how May doesn't really know the first thing about contests, doesn't really have a strategy and follows other people's advice instead of trusting herself... Oh yeah, and she makes it through of course... canonsueness is strong in this one! The appeals were lackluster...

5 out of 10 Hated the confirmation of May's Canon Sue status, but loved Harley and Drew in this.

Pokémon Advanced Battle Episode 29: Deceit and Assist

- Jessie always takes the time to reapply her makeup
- Jessie, "That's what you think Jen" LOVE THAT LINE!!!"

Oh Max, when will you learn that May's mistakes will never cost her anything.

May shows no real knowledge of contest or being a coordinator in this episode and really it cheapens her even being in this competition. She should have lost here. Pure and simple. She should have been eliminated. For crying out loud, Kenny's appeal in the Sinnoh GF looked better than May's

- So, instant Mastery of Ice Beam and evolution, the cost? May's battle against Anthony...
- Ash, "This'll be a good battle" At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if it sucked...
- Flygon... that was random
- Fire spin deflects Solar Beam and Flamethrower? Riiiiiiiiiight...
- May loses half her points because Roselia jumped on Flygon. Wow...
- Marian, "There's been a feeling the entire stadium and folks at home at been pulling for her" Riiiiiiiight...
- Everybody cheers for May... That's so sweet sueet... emphasis on the sue...

First off, 4 contest battles, 1 evolution, 1 move mastery and bundles of character interactions in one episode is too much... just too much. Harley v May was okay interactions wise but the battle itself wasn't that thrilling and hella rushed. May v Drew was great though, but didn't really scream contest. Anthony v May and Drew v Robert cannot even be commented since we didn't really see them... Nice interaction, but really again May and canon Suedom stick together...

I found really annoying that the Master Ball failed to catch that Wishcash when it swalloed the ball but Munchlax was caught by an ordinary Pokeball in the same situation.

Really? I don't see how when Nurse Joy's relationship with Snorunt was only akin to Clara and Turtwig and Melanie and Bulbasaur or even possibly Wilma and Gible. And that was it. Nurse Joy didn't save Snorunt twice, Nurse Joy didn't bond with Snorunt in this episode alone. Nurse Joy was just being Nurse Joy. Nurse Joy would have to be a bitch if she didn't feel a little something for Snorunt when Nurse Joy knew it for a long time (it's not like Nurse Joy said "Oh what a cute wonderful unknown Snorunt there, I want it to be mine, mine, mine). It's one thing to have your best friend save you because they should and it's expected, it's an entirely different thing when a random stranger risks their life to save yours when they "hated your guts" because you were being a pain in the ass.

It's just a minor thing that ticked me off... it's not the end of the world. It really just felt like the writers were just parachuting a pokemon on Ash and didn't really care to make it believable.

Well when a random stranger saves your life and you don't want to be a total bastard to them afterwards, then I guess you have to become their slaves and bend to their every whim....

First of all... flashback to my Chikorita capture review, it ticked me off too... I felt that there was a total personality shift in the middle of the episode for Chikorita. Sorta the same thing in this episode. Joy orders Snorunt a few times in the episode and Snorunt seemed closer to her than it was to Ash. The problem with this episode is that the change happens before Ash saves Snorunt's life. Joy herself says that usually Snorunt would have given the badges back and seems surprised it didn't... and that's before Ash saves Snorunt's life.

This Snorunt sees Ash and all of a sudden decides to fully trust him, play around with him and refuses to give back his badges because it might want to stay around Ash, oh yeah and that's not after Ash saves its life but just after seeing Ash in the entrance of a Pokemon Center = Artificial.

I don't know how Gible didn't love the Max/Ralts episode. That has been one of the most fan-favorite and popular episodes of the show for years.

As for May's battles not being real contest battles, again, who cares? As long as a battle is entertaining that is all that matters to me. Beautifly Vs. Medicham, Combusken Vs. Grumpig, Bulbasaur Vs. Caturne and Skitty Vs. Jynx were all very entertaining, memorable and action packed battles.

Skitty Vs. Dusclops was crap. I wish Timmy won that contest.

As long as a battle is entertaining that is all that matters to me. Beautifly Vs. Medicham, Combusken Vs. Grumpig, Bulbasaur Vs. Caturne and Skitty Vs. Jynx were all very entertaining, memorable and action packed battles.

True, but you could have seen this battle with anybody. What does May bring to that battle? What skills does she need to do it?

Quite frankly, those battles aren't showing really any sort of progress from May. They don't see her acquiring new skills, developp new techniques... Most of the time, they're extremely badly writter and bland....

Skitty Vs. Dusclops was crap. I wish Timmy won that contest.

- May, "I guess this is it. I wish I had eaten more candy." This is the one thing you'll regret... okay... that doesn't at all make you a freak...
- Robin(son Crusoe) makes its appearance...
- Love that Skitty does jack... Wailer and Skitty shot... foreshadowing of post-evo romance...
- Max finally has a purpose... to feed Munchlax... that's almost like having his own plot...
- Double-crossing TR...
- EVOLUTION!!!
- Robin goes back to the Island... he loves that Wailord...
- Brock, "Good luck sounds like you're doing the right thing" Yeah, go back on your island to die of malaria at age 32 you idiot!

The episode had a purpose: fill the void between the League and the GF and give the audience a breather. It did that. It was a filler, nothing more...

- NO!!! NO!!! NO, NO, NO and NO it makes absolutely no sense for TR to steal the torch.
- Why do they all call Mr. Goodshow Professor?
- Ash, "But he's also my big rival" From the one time you've met Morrison... riiiiiight...
- Oak, "You just do what you can and I'll be behind you 100%" Oak really had a dad vibe deel here...
- James, "I may just keep the wig"
- Jenny, "This looks like a job for my Blastoise" That was random...
- Using an ice attack... that's lame!
- Tyson, "Let's make this a competition we'll never forget" Read Tyson'll beat Ash.

Oh the torch episode... the torch episode... did I mentionned how glad I was they didn't do it in DP? Tyson gave us some lovely Ho Yay with Brock but then forgot his personality in the noodle restaurant

- Gligar and Growlithe... really, that's all they could muster up for Morrison...

- May, "Are you sure you're ready for this contest guys" Yeah... cause you're the poster child for being prepared...
- Speaking of overused pokemon... the Electabuzz line... Can they retired after DP please? pretty please?
- Apparantly Morrison can hear Ash even in this huge stadium...
- Ok Ok oK that kid's annoying...
- Max, "Wow Meowth against Persian that's a matchup I've never seen before." We have...
- SHADOW BALL'S NOT SUPPOSED TO WORK!!!
- Ash lights up the torch...
- Cameos! I nearly threw up when I saw Misty...

The requisite Let's rush some backstory into these total strangers at the last minute so they feel like more than just COTD episode. Battles weren't bad, could have done without Pikachu though...

- Morning Jog... I never got that part, it's not like he's actually gonna be running or really need to be all that fit for his battle. Running alongside your pokemon, yes, but just running with Pikachu... then again... Swellow flies, Glalie floats, Grovyle jumps like a ninja and it's not like Corphish and Torkoal are exactly marathon runners either... I mean they can be quick, but I mean...
- May and Tyson enjoy eating...
- Max, "You do realize that this is pokemon battle not Olympic wrestling...
- LOVE MAROWAK'S HEADBUTT!!!
- Machamp is a no-neck monster (reference anyone?)
- Boss can punch through walls!!!
- Morrison's Gligar is amazing!!! So, I guess all Gligar aren't created equal... cause Ash's... (Sorry I'm rusty and I gotta get back into shape for the Ash v Paul match...
- Torkoal and Corphish... oh well my interest dropped... TROPIUS... ok I'm back!
- Torkoal is knocked out by a Solarbeam and yet Corphish gets to resist a shockwave... riiiiiight...

TR Boss is funny and this episode suffered from too much Morrison. Seriously, the writers haven't built him up, there's no doubt that Ash'll beat him at this time and there's no real tension, no real drama between him and Ash... yawn. Nice see the Gligar line be given a great focus and shown to be capable, cuase that'll never happen again...

- QUILAVA!!!
- Max, "Ash really chose the perfect pokemon" Yeah a grass type and an Ice type against two fire types... We must have a different definition of perfect...
- Great tactics... Ice pillars + pinball... Sceptile's detect
- Mimey's sick... I was too after seeing Misty again...
- Why doesn't Ash pull out Torkoal before it's... there it's out...
- Ash, "Pikachu, I need you" Now's not the time to get your rocks off Ash...
- Pikachu's out too... damn... she's good.
- Headbutt on ghost type... right... though kudos for Destiny bonds...

I liked the double battle... At first I was iffy with Glalie starring but Ash used strategy and used his pokemon to its advantage to overcome a tough opponent. LOVE the beginning of the Katie battle, though very little personality from Ash's opponent. She's a bit dull. Ash lost half his team... Grovyle/Corphish/Swellow have their work cut out for them...

First part of the episode is great. Just great except for one thing. There wasn't really any surprised when it came to Ash's pokemon. Not only did we know who he was battling with, there barely was any switching on Ash's part... Second part of the episode was too melodramatic... the "Oh no I can't battle you cause we're good friends even though we only met like five seconds ago and that means more to me then the bonds I have with my pokemon who have been there from the start..." riiiiiiight...

7 out of 10 Mostly for the Katie battle... though Katie's personality? Her battling style stands out, her personality doesn't. She felt a bit like Trinity.

Good episode, but the battle was rushed... really rushed and very much solely about power v power, attack v attack. No strategy, no humph... Ok, I guess, but I'm waiting for my mind to be blown... Oh and the same six pokemon is starting to irritate. Not much, but a little, their limited movepools really hurts them here...

- I think Hariyama promoting obesity with its thick fat is a wrong message...
- Donphan... let's whore out that poke just a little bit more... not much more, just enough for us to get sick of seeing it before Ash gets one in the BF
- Love the animation of Swellow v Donphan!
- Brock, "Guess the timing for that Solarbeam was a little bit off... that's funny cause it's an hyperbeam...
- Wait wasn't Meowth hating on Tyson's Meowth a few episodes ago?
- So Ash pretty much ties with the guy who'll win the whole League...
- Morrison pulls a Torkoal...
- Brock, "Almost makes me want to start battling again myself" or stand around doing jack for the next 300 episodes... whichever floats your boat B-man...

Rushed battle is a rushed battle... Ash defeats a pseudo-legendary through a crack... and a bunch of other stuff weren't all that thrilling, but overall the battle was good. Not great, not mindblowing but a good solid battle.

7 out of 10 Overall I'm sort of underwhelmed... but entertained.

The Hoenn league proves Ash's Hoenn team was the best team he ever had. Ash got into the Top 8 without using any older Pokemon, which proves how strong they are.

Ash's Hoenn Pokemon were treated like God's by the writers, its such a shame the Sinnoh team didn't get as many accomplishments.

Actually, it proved how much Ash had progressed as a trainer more than it proves the strenght of the Hoenn team. They're not weak, but in Kanto for exemple, Ash got pokemon that were already "strong" and didn't know what to do with them. In Hoenn, Ash raised the pokemon himself from scratch and got them to that level.

That's what the Hoenn League proved.

-Personally, Dragonbreath here looks better than Dragonbreath in Kanto GF.
-SAND TOMB! Now, Sand Tomb is kinda of weird thing for me. While it essentially comes from Antlion larvea's traps(in which larvea digs a trap, wait's inside it and sucks it's prey into the larvea in it), it looks cooler like a sand tornado that traps opponent. It looks like that in games as well. But, that being said, I believe it is better for it to look and behave like it's real-life counterpart.

Who am I kidding. SAND HELL BITCHEZ.
-Oh and Vibrava's glowing blue eyes reminds me of Stone Edge.

Liked this episode in terms of character interaction. In terms of battles, well, the same complaint stays. But no real tension filled catfight makes me unhappy.

Yet it can't be denied that Ash's Hoenn Pokemon are some of his strongest battlers and they have loads of victories under their belts.

It really was a change from Kanto and those unevolved Johto Pokes, the Hoenn team really did shine and I'm glad they got an entire league to themselves. They deserved it.
