Lol, I really have no life for actually making this topic. But I was really interested in quantifiying just how much of every season was filler and how much was plot, and it was fun doing it.

Note that all of these percentages are *approximate*, because I know that we could never get everyone to agree on all the criteria for filler and which episodes are or aren't. With some episodes its obvious, of course, but there are a lot that I think can be argued, even some that I debated with myself over including or not.

the Critera I used to determine plot vs filler was basicly the following. Filler episodes are episodes that do NOT contain at least one of the following things...

-Pokemon captures/releases/evolutions/trades
-events relating to gyms and gym leaders or contests
-scene where a character trains their pokemon to learn a new move or to signifigantly improve themselves in battle, such that the pokemon's progress is visible in later episodes.
-events involving signifigant character development or background information that gets refrenced later
-events the develop the rivalries between the main characters and their respective rivals
-episodes involving events, characters, or locations taken out of the games (this one would probably be the most controversial point)

so here they are.

-Indigo League: 82 episodes total. Approximately 26 fillers. Filler percentage: 32%

List of filler epuisodes
"The Path to the Pokémon League"
"The School of Hard Knocks"

(I struggled on wether or not to consider path to the pokemon league and school of hardknocks as filler. On the one hand, they really *don't* effect that much, but on the other, the AJ episode featured some character growth for Ash, plsu both AJ and Giselle appear in the 2nd opening, so obviously the writers remembered them.)

hahah. no wonder DP is the best season ever. Anyway, comments, discussion, opinions?

Edit: Removed "Air Time" from the johto list, since it fits with my 6th criteria (the radio station in Goldenrod was a game event). removed "Oh Do You Know the Poffin Plan!", from DP's list, because its the episode where Hikari learned to make Poffin, a skill she uses the rest of the series.

Edit: made changes based on some comments.

Edit: added "The Treasure Is All Mine!" to the DP filler list. Even though it makes refences back to "Holy Matrimony", I think in the end it didn't really change anything, either for the characters or in how the audience views the characters.

Someone should link to this in the "Why is Johto hated?" thread :p

Good work on this, Rocketshipper. If anything, I think you could have been harsher in determining what was filler, but that would have made the percentages too depressing.

"A Sappy Ending" isn't filler. Ash got his Heracross in that episode.

Other than that and a few missed quotation marks, the list looks good.

oops, sorry your right. I was getting it confused with the Donphan episode right after it. Been so long since I actually watched johto, and I just went down the list of episodes to make this.

Keep in mind some fillers are excellent.

Some of those Johto fillers on that list were fantastic eps that nobody should miss out on, same for some of those Hoenn fillers.

I think a better list would be, "good filler/bad filler," so people know which fillers are great or not.

But good/bad is a lot more subjective. I could list my favorite and least favorite fillers, but not everyone would agree. and I didn;t really intend for this to be a "these are the episodes you should skip" list or something. I just wanted to quantify how much filler ws in each season for comparisons. DP wins, yay!

Well, no one is saying all the fillers is bad - I spy Do I Hear a Ralts on that list and almost everyone agrees it's fantastic. But it's rather troublesome to split up the list, especially since whether a filler is good or bad can be subjective sometimes.

You forgot "A Double Dilemma" from the Hoenn list though and should "Addres Unown" really be there? It's a very important episode for Larvitar's development, but then again, I guess most of Larvitar's arc could be considered filler. Maybe "You're a star, larvitar" should be put there instead.

EDIT: And damn, I didn't realize the difference between the amount of filler in Sinnoh compared to Johto was so much. :O Yay for the DP season /o/

You sure that we didn't have more fillers between Candice and Volkner? Feels like we did, sorta. Johto curse and all, you know?

Between Candice and Volkner, there was Brandon's return, Hunter J appearance once again, the Looker episode that establishes him as being part of the Team Galactic Plot, the double battle between Ash and Paul, intro of Lyra and Khoury, James winning Jesse another ribbon, the Team Galactic Plot, the return of Jame's fiance from Kanto, training ep for Dawn, Dawn's last contest, Monferno evolving into infernape...

*breathes* Yeah, a lot happened. Though Jame's fiance returning could be considered filler as well.

Yeah, but some of DP's training episodes can be skipped too. We can say they learned those attacks off-screen like they used to.

May hardly ever practiced Contest appeals in regular eps, yet they made like 5 eps just for Dawn to practice appeals.

I'm sorry but a couple of the criterias may be off for DPP. I find it to be waaay fillery.

And just because it may have the least fillers, doesn't mean it's the best season. It's plots are heavily recycled, making the older generation somewhat a bit peeved at the season. And it's AG themes with Original Overtones doesn't help it's best season ever, either.

But I don't think that 18% is just filler. :X It has to be more than that - it feel so unrealistic.

DP cheated with its filler, by making the fillers, "training episodes."

DP's filler is about Ash and Dawn training their pokemon to use a new attack for the entire episode, rather than the old-style filler of Ash helping a character with their problem.

...no man, just. NO. May's lack of appeal training was one of the worst things. Training episodes are important because it actually builds up to something important in some episodes and makes battles look more complete. Dawn's flame ice wouldn't have been considered as awesome as it was if it didn't have an episode leading up to it. Training episodes make things look less like bullshit and more like the result of hard work. It's not "cheating with its filler" - it's trying to give the series a stronger sense of continuity and a stronger underlying story line.

This... just this...

The fillers in Johto were mostly on the moral of helping others, its wrong to do wrong and its right to do right and making friendship yet in Sinnoh the fillers are mostly train your Pokemon to learn new techniques and attacks. There are some of episodes in Sinnoh that deal with those help the character situations but it only happens rarely.

Pokemon works better with shorter sagas.

Kanto, Orange and Battle Frontier had the least filler because the sagas themselves were so short.

Its also noticeable how Hoenn had the least filler of all the "three-year" sagas. I'm glad Hoenn didn't get stretched out the way Johto and Sinnoh were.

A double Dilemma was Gym Leader related, so I felt like it should not be on the filler list. I actually mainly have "Your a Star Larvitar" off the list because that episode had Ash training Larvitar and Cyndaquil. Its been a while since I saw Address Unown, so maybe I'm forgetting its importance though...

I think training episodes shouldn't be considered filler. If anything, the fact that earlier seasons didn't have many training episodes should be a mark against them. The show is about pokemon *trainers* so its nice to see them actually working to make their pokemon stronger, instead of them just randomly becoming stronger off screen.

I count five training episodes TOTAL for DP, and I wouldn't say that they were all focused exclusively on training either. Ash's two (the Gliscor and Buizel ones) also had him battling at the beginnings and ends, for one.

So what episodes not already on the list would you add then Scott? I assume the 5 training episodes, anything else??

If you ask me, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh were all 100% fillers. The only real saga was the Orange Islands.

Better adjust your list accordingly. My comments are infallible.
